Description

Bollinger La Grande Année Brut Champagne 2005 Magnum is a prestige cuvée made only in exceptional vintages, offering the depth, structure, and longevity that have made Bollinger one of Champagne’s great names. Crafted largely from Pinot Noir and vinified in small oak barrels before being aged under cork, it combines power with remarkable precision and complexity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this vintage Champagne shows a luminous golden color with a fine, persistent mousse. The nose is layered and expressive, with aromas of ripe orchard fruit, citrus peel, toasted nuts, brioche, subtle spice, and a distinctive mineral edge. On the palate, it is broad and vinous, with the richness of Pinot Noir supported by Chardonnay’s freshness, delivering notes of baked apple, lemon confit, hazelnut, and buttery pastry, all wrapped in a taut, elegant finish. The 2005 vintage has the concentration and structure to age beautifully for many more years, gaining further complexity and finesse over time. In magnum format, it will develop especially slowly and gracefully, making it an excellent choice for collectors and for those who enjoy mature Champagne.

Production
La Grande Année is sourced exclusively from Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards, with Pinot Noir mainly from Aÿ and Verzenay in the Montagne de Reims and Chardonnay from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Oiry in the Côte des Blancs. The grapes are harvested by hand, and the wine undergoes its first fermentation in small oak barrels, some of which are around 20 years old, before being bottled with a cork closure for extended cellar aging. Bollinger’s meticulous, fully hand-crafted approach underscores the precision and care behind this iconic cuvée.

Food & Serving
This Champagne is ideal with refined dishes such as lobster, scallops, roast poultry, truffle risotto, or mature hard cheeses, and it can also shine alongside sushi or delicate seafood. Serve chilled at around 8-10°C, and consider brief decanting only if the wine is showing particularly youthful reduction or if you want to open up its aromatic complexity in a large-format bottle.

Producer
Champagne Bollinger, founded in 1829 in Aÿ, is one of the most respected houses in Champagne and is renowned for its powerful, Pinot Noir-driven style. The estate is known for its commitment to traditional methods, including oak fermentation and extensive handwork, and La Grande Année stands among its most celebrated wines. Over the years, Bollinger has earned a strong international reputation for consistency, depth, and exceptional aging potential.
