Description

Bollinger La Grande Année Brut 2005 is a prestige Champagne released only in truly exceptional vintages, making it one of the house’s most sought-after wines. This Jeroboam format is especially impressive for collectors, offering the combination of Bollinger’s signature power, refined complexity, and outstanding aging potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep golden hue with fine, persistent bubbles. The nose is layered and expressive, with aromas of toasted brioche, ripe citrus, baked apple, hazelnut, and subtle spice, all framed by the finesse of mature Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The palate is full-bodied and structured, with impressive depth and tension. Pinot Noir brings power, richness, and a broad, vinous texture, while Chardonnay adds precision, freshness, and mineral lift. The 2005 vintage has excellent cellaring potential and will continue to evolve beautifully for years, gaining more nuance and complexity with age.

Production
La Grande Année is crafted only in exceptional years, using grapes exclusively from Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards. The Pinot Noir comes mainly from Aÿ and Verzenay in the Montagne de Reims, while the Chardonnay is sourced from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Oiry in the Côte des Blancs. Fermentation takes place in small oak barrels, averaging around 20 years of age, followed by bottle aging under cork, a traditional method that contributes to the wine’s depth and complexity. All work is carried out by hand, from harvest through bottling.

Food & Serving
This Champagne is a superb match for refined dishes such as lobster, scallops, roast poultry, truffle risotto, or aged Parmesan. It can also stand up beautifully to richer preparations like veal or dishes with creamy sauces. Serve chilled at around 8-10°C, and consider decanting briefly if the wine is still very young or tightly knit in order to open up its full aromatic range.

Producer
Champagne Bollinger is one of the great historic houses of Champagne, widely respected for its commitment to craftsmanship, oak fermentation, and Pinot Noir-led style. The estate owns an extensive collection of oak barrels and maintains a meticulous, hands-on approach at every stage of production. Bollinger’s La Grande Année has earned a stellar reputation among critics and enthusiasts alike, consistently ranking among the region’s benchmark prestige cuvées.
