Description
Bollinger Special Cuvée is the house’s signature Champagne and a benchmark for non-vintage style, combining depth, power, and finesse in a way few other cuvées can match. Though considered Bollinger’s “standard” release, it draws heavily on Grand Cru and Premier Cru fruit, giving it remarkable complexity and a distinctly luxurious character. Inspired by a historic 1846 bottle discovered in the Bollinger cellars, its new elegant bottle design reflects the house’s long tradition of craftsmanship and pursuit of perfection.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Special Cuvée shows a fine, persistent mousse and a rich golden hue that hints at its generous style. The nose opens with ripe apple, pear, toasted brioche, and subtle notes of hazelnut, spice, and citrus peel, all framed by a signature Bollinger depth.
On the palate it is full-bodied and layered, with excellent tension between creamy texture and fresh acidity. Flavors of stone fruit, baked citrus, roasted nuts, and delicate yeast-driven complexity linger long on the finish. While delicious now, it also has the structure and balance to evolve gracefully over several years.
Production
Bollinger Special Cuvée is crafted from a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier sourced largely from prestigious parcels in Champagne, with a high proportion from Grand Cru and Premier Cru sites. The vineyards benefit from the region’s chalky soils and cool climate, which preserve freshness while allowing for generous ripeness. Vinification follows Bollinger’s traditional house style, emphasizing structure, reserve wines, and careful blending to create a Champagne of depth, consistency, and character.
Food & Serving
This is a wonderfully versatile Champagne for the table, pairing beautifully with oysters, caviar, lobster, sashimi, roast chicken, or rich canapés such as smoked salmon and aged Comté. Serve chilled at around 8–10°C to let the wine’s texture and aromas open fully. Decanting is not necessary, but allowing a few minutes in the glass can help reveal even more of its complexity.
