Description
Bollinger La Grande Année Rosé 2015 is the house’s prestige rosé Champagne, crafted only in exceptional vintages and released after extended aging in the Bollinger cellars. Marrying power, structure and finesse, it offers a richly textured, gastronomic style that stands apart from more delicate rosés. This 2015 release highlights the strength of Pinot Noir from Bollinger’s best sites, lifted by the precision and elegance of Chardonnay. What makes La Grande Année Rosé unique is its use of still red Pinot Noir from the legendary La Côte aux Enfants vineyard to create depth of color, intensity of fruit, and a vinous, almost Burgundian profile. Fermentation takes place entirely in small oak barrels, an old-school method that adds complexity and longevity. First produced as a prestige cuvée in the late 20th century, La Grande Année (and its rosé counterpart) has become one of Champagne’s benchmarks for age-worthy, food-friendly sparkling wine.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Grande Année Rosé 2015 shows a luminous, salmon-pink hue with coppery highlights and an exceptionally fine, persistent mousse. The colour speaks to both the maturity of the base wine and the presence of serious still red Pinot Noir in the blend.
The nose is complex and layered, opening with wild red berries, blood orange and pomegranate, followed by notes of dried rose petals, spice, cocoa nibs and a touch of brioche from long lees aging. With air, deeper aromas emerge: morello cherry, subtle smokiness, and hints of toasted hazelnut and dried apricot.
On the palate, this is a full-bodied, vinous rosé Champagne with Bollinger’s hallmark richness and structure. Ripe red fruits (raspberry, cherry, strawberry) are framed by citrus zest, saline minerality and a refined, chalky texture. The presence of oak fermentation shows not as woodiness but as breadth, creaminess and subtle spice. The finish is long, dry and precise, with a lingering impression of red currant, pink grapefruit and fine pastry. Thanks to its powerful structure and high-quality fruit, the 2015 La Grande Année Rosé has excellent aging potential; properly cellared, it will continue to evolve and gain complexity for at least 10–15 years, and likely longer in magnum.
Production
La Grande Année Rosé 2015 is sourced primarily from Grands and Premiers Crus in the Champagne region, with a strong emphasis on Pinot Noir from Ay and Verzenay, and Chardonnay from Avize, Chouilly and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. These chalk-rich slopes provide both intensity and finesse: Pinot Noir contributing depth and structure, Chardonnay delivering tension and elegance. All grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, allowing for strict selection both in the vineyard and at the press. True to Bollinger tradition, the base wines are fermented in small, old oak barrels rather than stainless steel, which encourages micro-oxygenation and texture without overt oak flavor. For the rosé component, still red Pinot Noir—principally from the famed La Côte aux Enfants vineyard—is blended in to achieve colour, aromatic complexity and tannic backbone. After bottling, the wine undergoes its second fermentation and is aged on the lees for around six to seven years, with riddling and disgorgement performed by hand. A carefully judged Brut dosage is added to balance the wine’s natural tension while preserving its dry, gastronomic profile.
Food & Serving
This is a serious gastronomic rosé Champagne that shines at the table. It pairs beautifully with dishes such as roast duck with cherries, pigeon, veal tartare, or lamb with Mediterranean herbs. It is also superb with rich seafood preparations: lobster or langoustine, seared tuna or salmon, and scallops with a delicate sauce. Earthy dishes like mushroom risotto or truffle-based cuisine, as well as aged firm cheeses, also find a natural partner in this wine’s structure and depth. Serve well chilled but not icy, ideally at 10–12°C (50–54°F), so that the complexity of the nose and palate can express themselves fully. Decanting is not obligatory, but for more contemplative service—especially with older bottles or magnums—pouring into a large-bowled white wine or Champagne glass and giving it some time in the glass will allow the wine to open and reveal its full aromatic range.
Producer
Founded in 1829 in the village of Aÿ, Bollinger is one of Champagne’s most revered houses, celebrated for its Pinot Noir–driven, full-bodied style. Still independently owned and fiercely committed to quality, Bollinger controls a high proportion of its own vineyards—many in Grand Cru and Premier Cru villages—which allows exceptional consistency and character across vintages. The house is known for traditional craftsmanship: fermentation in small oak barrels, extended lees aging, hand riddling and low-yield, old-vine vineyards. Bollinger’s wines have long been associated with fine gastronomy and have earned numerous accolades from critics worldwide; its prestige cuvées, including La Grande Année and La Grande Année Rosé, are regarded as benchmarks for age-worthy, complex Champagne that reflects both place and painstaking, artisanal production.
