Description
Bollinger PN VZ19 is a distinctive Blanc de Noirs Champagne that showcases the depth and character of Pinot Noir from Verzenay and neighbouring villages. Based on the 2019 vintage and enriched by a substantial proportion of reserve wines—including a notable contribution from 2009—it combines Bollinger’s signature richness with vibrant freshness. Presented in magnum format, it is particularly well suited to celebratory occasions and extended table service.
Tasting Notes
The wine appears bright gold in the glass, with a fine, persistent mousse. Its expressive bouquet reveals ripe yellow stone fruit, mandarin and delicate praline, complemented by the toasty complexity associated with Bollinger’s mature reserve wines. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, polished and generous, with a smooth, rounded texture balanced by lively acidity. A subtle saline note brings definition to the finish. It is enjoyable now, but the combination of Pinot Noir, reserve wines and magnum ageing suggests it can develop further complexity over the next several years when properly stored.
Production
The cuvée is based on the 2019 harvest, which represents 52% of the blend, while 48% consists of reserve wines, including approximately 25% from 2009. Verzenay accounts for 40% of the blend, with additional tension and structure drawn from Pinot Noir parcels in Aÿ, Avenay-Val-d’Or, Tauxières and Mutigny. The wine was disgorged with a dosage of 6 g/l, preserving its balance between richness, freshness and a clean, mineral finish.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at around 8–10°C, allowing it a little time in the glass to reveal its layered aromas. It is an excellent partner for oysters, shellfish, sashimi and grilled fish, while its fuller body also suits roast poultry, veal and mature hard cheeses. Decanting is not normally necessary for Champagne, although opening the magnum shortly before serving and using sufficiently large glasses can help its aromas unfold.
Producer
Founded in 1829 and based in Aÿ, Bollinger is one of Champagne’s most respected houses, renowned for its Pinot Noir-led wines, extensive reserve-wine library and traditional production methods. The house has long been associated with powerful, vinous Champagnes that combine structure and ageing potential with elegance. Its Blanc de Noirs expressions highlight Bollinger’s close relationship with some of the finest Pinot Noir villages in the Montagne de Reims and Vallée de la Marne.
