Description
Bolla Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Rhetico 2019 is a rich, full-bodied red that captures the opulence and depth Amarone lovers seek. Named in homage to the ancient Venetian cult of the goddess Reitia—symbol of fertility, prosperity and abundance—this wine mirrors those virtues in its generous, velvety style. Crafted from Corvina and Rondinella and aged in a range of barriques, it offers layered complexity and a distinctly classical Amarone character.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Rhetico shows a deep, concentrated ruby color with garnet reflections at the rim, hinting at both power and refinement. The nose is intense and enveloping, with ripe dark cherries, dried plums and figs at the forefront, intertwined with notes of cocoa, licorice, sweet spices, and a touch of vanilla and toasted oak from its time in barrique. Subtle hints of dried herbs and tobacco add further nuance with air.
On the palate, this Amarone is full-bodied and plush, with a generous, silky texture that remains balanced by fresh acidity and well-structured tannins. Flavors of black cherry compote, dried berries and dates are layered with dark chocolate, espresso, and warm baking spices, leading into a long, persistent finish marked by a gentle, pleasantly bitter Amarone signature. The 2019 vintage is approachable now with some aeration, yet it has the concentration and structure to evolve beautifully over 10–15 years in a good cellar, gaining further complexity and tertiary notes over time.
Production
Sourced from selected vineyards in the heart of Valpolicella Classico in Veneto, Bolla Amarone Rhetico reflects the region’s classic terroir of well-drained, calcareous and clay-limestone soils on hillside sites that favor excellent ripening and concentration. The Corvina and Rondinella grapes are harvested by hand, carefully sorted, and then traditionally appassito—left to dry in ventilated lofts for several months—to intensify sugars, aromas and structure. After gentle pressing and a slow, temperature-controlled fermentation, the wine is matured in a mix of different barriques and wood formats, a choice that enhances its fruity core while adding layers of spice, toast and complexity without overwhelming the varietal character.
Food & Serving
This Amarone is a natural match for rich, flavorful dishes such as braised beef, ossobuco, game (venison, wild boar), slow-cooked lamb shanks, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Grana Padano. It also pairs beautifully with truffle dishes and hearty mushroom ragù, and can be enjoyed solo as a meditative after-dinner wine. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression, and decant for 1–2 hours before serving to allow the aromas and texture to fully open up.
Producer
Bolla is one of the historic names of Veneto, with roots dating back to the late 19th century, when the Bolla family began producing wines that expressed the character of Valpolicella and Soave. Over the decades, Bolla became a key ambassador of Amarone della Valpolicella on the international stage, helping to define and popularize the style worldwide. Today, the estate combines long-standing local knowledge with modern winemaking, focusing on carefully selected vineyards, traditional appassimento techniques and thoughtful barrel aging. The Rhetico Amarone stands as a testament to Bolla’s role in shaping the region’s reputation, offering a refined yet generous interpretation of classic Amarone Classico.
