Description

Beychevelle 2022 is a poised and polished red from one of Saint-Julien’s most historic estates, crafted in a vintage that beautifully combines ripeness with classical Bordeaux structure. This is a refined, age-worthy claret that showcases the château’s signature elegance, supple tannins and pure, dark fruit. For collectors and enthusiasts alike, it offers a modern expression of Left Bank sophistication with the depth to reward time in the cellar.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Beychevelle 2022 shows a deep, vivid garnet-purple hue, signaling concentration and youthful intensity. The nose is inviting and layered, with aromas of blackcurrants, ripe plum and blackberry compote, lifted by notes of violets, graphite and a subtle, creamy touch of new oak—think vanilla pod, sweet spice and a hint of cedar. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a generous core of ripe black fruit wrapped in finely grained yet assertive tannins. Flavors of cassis, dark cherries and black plum are interwoven with hints of mocha, tobacco leaf and baking spices. The texture is velvety but structured, with fresh acidity providing lift and precision through a long, polished finish. While already expressive in its youth, Beychevelle 2022 has the balance and tannic spine to evolve gracefully for 12–20 years, gaining complexity and tertiary nuances with time in bottle.

Production
Sourced from the gravelly, well-drained soils of Saint-Julien in the Médoc, Beychevelle 2022 is typically based on Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and smaller portions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The proximity to the Gironde estuary moderates temperatures, encouraging slow, even ripening and excellent phenolic maturity. Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel, often by hand, to ensure optimal selection at the perfect moment of ripeness. In the cellar, the fruit is sorted carefully, then fermented in temperature-controlled vats to preserve purity of fruit and aromatic finesse. The wine is subsequently aged in French oak barrels, with a significant proportion of new oak, where it undergoes malolactic fermentation and élevage, gaining structure, texture and the subtle, toasty nuances that support but never overwhelm the fruit.

Food & Serving
Beychevelle 2022 is a natural partner for classic French cuisine and refined meat dishes. It pairs beautifully with roast lamb, dry-aged ribeye, beef Wellington, duck breast, venison or a truffled mushroom tart. Mature hard cheeses—such as Comté, aged Gouda or well-aged cheddar—also complement its structure and depth. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and balance; in its youth, a gentle decant of 1–2 hours will help the tannins soften and allow the bouquet to open fully. As the wine ages and begins to show more tertiary notes, a shorter decant may be sufficient, primarily to remove any sediment.

Producer
Château Beychevelle is one of the most storied names in Saint-Julien and a celebrated Fourth Growth in the 1855 Classification of Bordeaux. Its iconic label, depicting a ship with a lowered sail, pays homage to the legend of the Duc d’Épernon, to whom sailors would “baisser la voile” (lower the sail) as a sign of respect—hence the château’s name. Over the centuries, Beychevelle has built a reputation for producing some of the appellation’s most elegant and approachable wines, often described as marrying the finesse of Saint-Julien with the depth and gravitas of the Médoc. Modern investments in the vineyard and cellar have further elevated quality, placing Beychevelle firmly among the region’s benchmark estates, consistently sought after by collectors and Bordeaux lovers worldwide.
