Description
Beychevelle 2018 in magnum format (1.5L) is a striking expression of Saint-Julien elegance, captured in a deeply structured and ageworthy vintage. This is classic Left Bank Bordeaux: noble, poised and richly concentrated, with the added benefit of slower, more graceful development in the larger bottle. For collectors and serious Bordeaux lovers, this magnum offers both grandeur at the table and superb cellaring potential.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Beychevelle 2018 shows a dense, almost opaque garnet core with a vibrant ruby rim, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is intensely classical: blackcurrant (cassis), ripe blackberry and plum compote unfold with air, followed by notes of unsmoked cigar tobacco, tilled earth, cedar chest and a subtle graphite edge.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, powerful yet refined, with tightly knit layers of dark fruit wrapped in firm, grainy tannins. Flavors of blackcurrant, black plum and crushed blackberry are interwoven with earthy, mineral and lightly spicy oak nuances, carried by a precise, refreshing line of acidity. The finish is long, mineral and persistent, suggesting a wine built for longevity rather than immediate showiness. In magnum, it will need a solid 5–6 years from vintage to really start opening, and should then drink beautifully for at least two decades or more.
Production
Château Beychevelle is located in the heart of Saint-Julien in Bordeaux, where deep Garonne gravels, well-drained soils and the temperate maritime climate create ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon and its Bordeaux companions. The vineyard is planted mainly to Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, all harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, typically by hand to ensure careful selection. After fermentation and maceration designed to extract fine tannins and purity of fruit, the 2018 Beychevelle was aged for around 18 months in French oak barrels, 60% new and 40% one-year-old, allowing the wine to gain complexity, structure and aromatic finesse without overwhelming the fruit.
Food & Serving
This 2018 Beychevelle magnum is a natural partner for refined, flavorful dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, entrecôte Bordelaise, duck breast, venison, or slow-braised beef and veal dishes. It also complements mature hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and structure. Given its youth and concentration, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended if enjoyed in the near term; shorter decanting will suffice as it evolves with bottle age, especially in magnum.
Producer
Château Beychevelle is one of the historic classed growths of the Médoc, a Quatrième Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification and a reference point for the Saint-Julien appellation. The estate’s name and iconic ship-emblazoned label recall its noble past, linked to the Dukes of Épernon and the tradition of lowering sails (“baisse voile” → Beychevelle) in salute as boats passed on the Gironde. Over the years, significant investment in the vineyards and cellar has elevated quality, and Beychevelle is now widely regarded as one of Saint-Julien’s most consistent and elegant châteaux, producing wines that combine classical Bordeaux structure with polished, modern precision.
