Description

Beychevelle 2018 is a refined expression of classic Saint-Julien, uniting depth, elegance and age‑worthy structure in one seamless bottle. Crafted in a superb Bordeaux vintage, it marries ripe, dark fruit with the estate’s hallmark finesse and balance. A historic Fourth Growth of the 1855 Classification, Château Beychevelle has long been celebrated for wines that are both approachable in youth and capable of graceful evolution in the cellar.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Beychevelle 2018 is deep, opaque garnet with a vivid purple rim that hints at its youth and concentration. The nose opens gradually—this is a wine that rewards a good swirl—with layered aromas of blackcurrant, ripe blackberry and plum compote, followed by notes of cedar chest, cigar box, tilled earth and a faint graphite, pencil‑shaving edge. On the palate, it sits between medium and full‑bodied, compact and tightly knit at this stage. Finely packed black fruit and dark berry flavors are wrapped in firm, grainy tannins and supported by a precise line of refreshing acidity. Earthy, mineral undertones and subtle oak spice carry through to a long, polished, mineral‑tinged finish. Still youthful and somewhat coiled, it will benefit from 5–6 years of further cellaring and should drink beautifully for at least two decades beyond that window, developing more complexity, softness and secondary nuances with time.

Production
Beychevelle’s vineyards lie on the gravelly, well‑drained soils of Saint‑Julien in the Médoc, a privileged terroir for Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The proximity to the Gironde estuary helps moderate temperatures and promotes even ripening, especially in warm vintages like 2018. Grapes are typically hand‑harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, with careful sorting to ensure only the best fruit enters the grand vin. Fermentation takes place in temperature‑controlled vats to preserve purity of fruit and refine tannin extraction, followed by élevage of around 18 months in French oak barrels, approximately 60% new and 40% one‑year‑old. This thoughtful use of oak lends structure and aromatic complexity without overshadowing the character of the fruit and the terroir.

Food & Serving
Beychevelle 2018 is a natural companion to classic, richly flavored cuisine: think roast lamb with herbs, dry‑aged ribeye, beef Wellington, venison, or braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, mushroom dishes, and hard or semi‑firm cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda or Tomme de Savoie. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and texture. In its youth, decanting for 1.5–2 hours is recommended to help the wine open up; as it matures and the tannins soften, a shorter decant or careful serving from the bottle will suffice.

Producer
Château Beychevelle is one of the most emblematic estates of Saint‑Julien, officially classified as a Quatrième Cru (Fourth Growth) in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Its history stretches back to the 16th and 17th centuries, and the dramatic label—depicting a ship with billowing sails—recalls the legend of ships lowering their sails in salute to the powerful Duke of Épernon, an early owner of the estate. Over time, Beychevelle has become renowned for producing wines that bridge power and finesse, often described as among the most elegant of the Médoc. With continual investments in vineyard management and cellar technology, the château has solidified its reputation as a benchmark Saint‑Julien, consistently praised by critics and collectors for its reliability, charm and capacity to age gracefully.
