Description
Meursault is best known for great white Burgundy, but Les Malpoiriers reveals a rarer, red expression of this celebrated village. Crafted by Bertrand de Monceny in very limited quantities, this 2023 Pinot Noir brings Meursault’s limestone-driven finesse to a wine of striking aromatic clarity and elegance.
Tasting Notes
The 2023 shows a bright, transparent ruby color and a cool-fruited profile. Aromas of red cherry, redcurrant, wild strawberry, subtle florals, fine spice, and a gentle earthy minerality lead into a palate that is linear, energetic, and refined.
Silky tannins and fresh acidity give the wine poise and lift, while the terroir remains beautifully present throughout. This is a delicate, expressive red Burgundy built more on precision than power, and it should reward short- to medium-term cellaring as its nuances continue to unfold over the next several years.
Production
Les Malpoiriers is a small parcel in Meursault, where limestone-rich soils help shape the wine’s tension, purity, and mineral detail. The vineyard’s exceptional exposure and terroir are reflected in the wine’s transparency and cool, refined fruit profile. Vinification is aimed at preserving freshness and site expression, resulting in a red Burgundy that feels precise, articulate, and distinctly connected to its origin.
Food & Serving
Serve this wine slightly cool, around 15-16°C, to highlight its freshness and aromatic lift. It pairs well with roast poultry, duck breast, mushroom dishes, veal, and lightly seasoned game, as well as dishes featuring earthy vegetables or fine charcuterie. Decanting is not essential, but a short decant may help the wine open up if enjoyed young.
Producer
Domaine Bertrand de Monceny is associated with thoughtful, terroir-driven Burgundy production and a willingness to express more unusual parcel-specific identities. In a region defined by tradition, this cuvée stands out as a rare red Meursault, offering a distinctive perspective on one of Burgundy’s most admired villages. Its limited availability and singular style make it especially notable for Burgundy enthusiasts seeking something beyond the expected.
