Description
Bertram-Baltes Spätburgunder Dernauer Hardtberg 2019 Treibgut is a rare Ahr Pinot Noir with a compelling story: a site wine rescued from the flood disaster of July 2021. From 40-year-old vines on slate and greywacke, it combines precision, purity, and a deeply authentic sense of place.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Spätburgunder shows the cool, elegant profile typical of the Ahr, with a restrained and refined aromatic expression. The nose leans toward fresh, ripe dark berries, supported by a darker, more profound spice note with hints of malt and subtle earthy depth.
On the palate, it is delicate rather than powerful, with a vivid, cool-fruited core and a finely textured, natural feel. Partial whole-cluster maceration adds lift and nuance, while the oak ageing frames the wine without overpowering it. Built to age gracefully, it should continue to gain complexity over the next several years.
Production
The Dernauer Hardtberg vineyard is shaped by slate and greywacke soils, which lend the wine its distinct mineral tension and savory depth. The vines are around 40 years old, and the grapes were harvested by hand. About 25% of the fruit was cold macerated as whole clusters, while the remainder was destemmed; fermentation occurred spontaneously, followed by 14 months of ageing in 600-liter oak casks. The wine was bottled with only a small sulfur addition, without fining or filtration, to preserve its natural character.
Food & Serving
This Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with roast poultry, duck, mushroom dishes, game birds, or lightly grilled veal. It also works well with earthy vegetarian dishes and aged semi-hard cheeses. Serve it slightly cool, around 15–17°C, and consider decanting briefly if opening it young to let its aromatic complexity unfold.
