Description
Bertram-Baltes Spätburgunder Ahrweiler Forstberg 2019 is a finely crafted Pinot Noir from one of Germany’s most respected cool-climate regions. Sourced from the prized Ahrweiler Forstberg site and made with a hands-off, terroir-driven approach, it captures both the elegance of the variety and the depth of the Ahr’s steep slate-and-sandstone slopes.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows the refined, transparent style that makes Ahr Spätburgunder so compelling. Expect a fragrant nose with a mix of bright red berries, darker cherry fruit, and subtle earthy, spicy accents, supported by a cool, restrained profile and a delicate mineral edge. On the palate, it should be precise and layered, with ripe but fresh fruit, fine tannins, and a supple texture that reflects both old vines and careful extraction. Its balance and structure suggest good aging potential, with the wine likely to gain complexity over several years in bottle.
The overall impression is of a Pinot Noir with poise rather than power: graceful, focused, and highly expressive of its origin. The minimal intervention in the cellar allows the vineyard character to speak clearly, while the use of large oak casks adds gentle frame without overwhelming the fruit.
Production
The Ahrweiler Forstberg vineyard is defined by sandstone loam and greywacke soils, giving the wine a distinct mineral backbone and a sense of tension. The vines are around 40 years old and planted with the local Stuber clone, which naturally limits yields and concentrates flavour. Grapes were harvested by hand, 70% destemmed, with the remainder fermented as whole clusters after a cold maceration. Fermentation occurred spontaneously, and the wine was aged for 14 months in 600-litre barrels made from local oak before being bottled unfiltered with only a small addition of sulfur.
Food & Serving
This Spätburgunder is a natural match for duck, roasted pheasant, veal, mushroom dishes, and earthy vegetarian plates such as truffle risotto or lentil ragout. It is best served slightly cool, around 14–16°C, to highlight its freshness and aromatic detail. Decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended if the bottle is opened young, especially to let the wine relax and раскры its full perfume and texture.
