Description
Bertram-Baltes Frühburgunder Neuenahrer Sonnenberg 2019 Treibgut is a rare single-vineyard Ahr red with a remarkable story behind the bottle: it was rescued from the devastating 2021 floods in the Ahr Valley. Made from Frühburgunder, a prized early-ripening Pinot Noir mutation, it combines delicacy, depth, and a strong sense of place.
Tasting Notes
Expect a bright, finely structured red with a translucent ruby hue. The nose typically leans toward ripe cherry, wild berries, dried herbs, and subtle earthy and smoky nuances, reflecting both the grape and the slate-driven Ahr terroir.
On the palate, Frühburgunder is known for its supple texture, gentle tannins, and elegant fruit rather than sheer power. This 2019 vintage should offer a harmonious balance of red berry fruit, spice, and mineral tension, with enough structure to age gracefully for several more years while remaining approachable now.
Production
Sourced from Neuenahrer Sonnenberg in the Ahr, one of Germany’s most respected steep-slope red-wine sites, the wine benefits from a cool climate and slate-rich soils that help preserve freshness and precision. The 2019 Treibgut is a vineyard wine with a dramatic provenance, having been salvaged after the July 2021 flood disaster.
As a Frühburgunder from a top Ahr parcel, it is likely crafted with careful hand harvesting and gentle vinification to protect the grape’s naturally refined aromatics and moderate tannin profile. The focus is on expressing site character, purity, and finesse rather than heavy extraction.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roast duck, pigeon, mushroom dishes, veal, or game birds, as well as earthy vegetarian plates with lentils or root vegetables. Serve it slightly cool, ideally around 15–17°C, and consider a short decant if opening young to let the aromatics unfold.
Producer
Bertram-Baltes is a highly regarded Ahr producer known for precise, site-driven wines that showcase the region’s finesse rather than power. The estate has built a strong reputation for expressive Pinot Noir and Frühburgunder from some of the Ahr’s finest steep vineyard sites. Its wines are widely appreciated for purity, elegance, and a clear sense of origin.
