Description

Bertram-Baltes Alte Reben Blanc de Noir 2021 is a strikingly serious take on a style that is often treated as simple and breezy. Crafted from 100% Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) grown on old vines in the steep Ahr Valley, it offers precision, depth and a cool mineral edge rather than just easy fruit. This is a white wine made from red grapes that showcases the full character of its terroir, bridging the finesse of fine Pinot with the tension and clarity of top German whites.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Blanc de Noir appears a very pale straw to onion-skin hue, with just a delicate blush hinting at its red grape origins. The nose is strikingly pure and cool-toned: think white currant and gooseberry, wrapped in notes of crushed slate, a touch of flint smoke and subtle, well-judged wood spice in the background. On the palate, the wine is taut, linear and intensely focused, driven by a finely etched, almost biting acidity that gives it real energy and length. The fruit remains restrained and elegant, making room for a salty, slate-infused minerality and gentle herbal nuances to shine through. The texture is silky yet firm, with a long, precise finish that feels more like a top dry Riesling than a typical blush. Enjoy it now for its vibrancy, or cellar for 3–5 years to let the structure soften and the mineral and nutty tones gain further complexity.

Production
The grapes for Alte Reben Blanc de Noir come from old-vine Spätburgunder parcels rooted in the Ahr’s classic steep slate soils, which lend the wine its trademark coolness and mineral backbone. Yields are kept low, and harvesting is done by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches reach the cellar. The red grapes are gently pressed with minimal skin contact to obtain a pale must, which is then fermented and matured in large neutral wooden casks rather than stainless steel. This élevage on fine lees in old wood adds subtle texture and complexity without masking the clarity of fruit or the stony character of the site.

Food & Serving
This is an exceptionally versatile food wine that shines with delicate yet flavourful dishes: think ceviche or tartare of sea bass, grilled prawns, lightly smoked trout, or sushi and sashimi. It also works beautifully with fine vegetable cuisine—white asparagus, fennel, artichokes, or goat’s cheese salads—as well as poultry with lemon and herbs. Serve well chilled but not ice-cold, ideally around 9–11°C, to allow the aromas and texture to unfold. Decanting is not essential, but a brief splash into a carafe or giving it time to open in the glass will reward you with extra nuance and length.

Producer
Bertram-Baltes is one of the rising stars of the Ahr Valley, a region long renowned for its Pinot Noir grown on dramatic slate terraces. Led by Julia Bertram and Benedikt Baltes, the estate focuses almost exclusively on Spätburgunder, working organically in the vineyards and with a decidedly Burgundian, terroir-driven mindset in the cellar. Their approach—old vines, low yields, spontaneous fermentations, and careful aging in large and small barrels—has helped redefine what Ahr Pinot can be, from serious reds to characterful Blanc de Noirs like this one. In a region rebuilding and reinventing itself, Bertram-Baltes stands at the forefront, consistently earning critical praise for purity, precision and authenticity.
