Description

Bernhard Ott’s Grüner Veltliner Feuersbrunner Ried Spiegel 1. Lage Bio 2022 is a benchmark expression of Wagram Grüner from one of Austria’s most respected growers. Sourced from the classified single vineyard Ried Spiegel and farmed organically, this wine combines precision, depth and understated power. It’s a wine that speaks clearly of its origin: loess-rich soils, cool nights and meticulous hands-on work in the vineyard and cellar.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Ried Spiegel shows a bright, pale straw color with greenish reflections, signaling youthful freshness and vitality. The nose is refined and focused, with notes of crisp green apple, pear skin and white stone fruit, wrapped in hints of lime zest, white pepper, fennel seed and a delicate herbal lift. Subtle floral tones and a quiet, stony minerality sit in the background and become more pronounced with air. On the palate, this is precise and elegant rather than showy, with a finely etched structure typical of top Grüner Veltliner from Wagram. Juicy orchard fruit and citrus are carried by a lively yet well-integrated acidity, while the loess-derived texture lends a gentle creaminess without ever feeling heavy. The classic Veltliner spice—white pepper and a touch of tobacco leaf—threads through the mid-palate into a long, saline, mineral-driven finish. While already appealing in its youth, the balance of fruit, acidity and extract suggests very good aging potential: expect it to evolve gracefully over 6–10 years, gaining complexity, depth and more pronounced tertiary notes.

Production
Ried Spiegel is one of Feuersbrunn’s most renowned sites, a 1. Lage (premier cru) vineyard that sits on deep loess soils with excellent water retention and a favorable exposure, providing both ripeness and freshness. The loess lends the wine its hallmark combination of texture, spice and fine minerality. At Weingut Bernhard Ott, the vineyard is cultivated organically (and in practice often beyond that, with strong biodynamic influence), with great emphasis on soil health, low yields and hand work throughout the season. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, carefully sorted and gently pressed to preserve purity. Fermentation is typically spontaneous with indigenous yeasts, often in large neutral casks or tanks, allowing the character of Ried Spiegel and Grüner Veltliner to shine without intrusive oak. Extended lees contact adds subtle creaminess and complexity, while the overall approach remains focused on clarity, precision and terroir expression.

Food & Serving
This Grüner Veltliner is a versatile food wine, shining alongside delicately prepared dishes where its structure and spice can play a supporting role rather than dominate. It pairs beautifully with freshwater fish (grilled trout, pike-perch), shellfish, sushi and sashimi, as well as classic Austrian fare such as Wiener Schnitzel, Tafelspitz or vegetable-centric dishes like asparagus, artichokes and herb-laced salads. It also works well with lightly spiced Asian cuisine—think Vietnamese or Japanese dishes with citrus, ginger and fresh herbs. Serve at 9–11 °C to highlight its freshness and aromatics. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes, or simply opening the bottle a little before serving, will help the wine unfurl its subtle layers of fruit, spice and minerality.

Producer
Weingut Bernhard Ott, based in Feuersbrunn in the Wagram region, is widely regarded as one of Austria’s leading producers of Grüner Veltliner. The Ott family has been growing wine here for generations, but it is Bernhard Ott’s focus on terroir-driven, organically (and largely biodynamically) farmed wines that has brought the estate international acclaim. Concentrating primarily on Grüner Veltliner and on some of the region’s top sites—like Ried Spiegel—Ott has become a reference point for pure, precise and ageworthy Wagram wines. The estate regularly earns high ratings from leading wine critics and guides, and is seen as a standard-bearer for both quality and sustainable viticulture in the region.

Grüner Veltliner from Ried Spiegel is a true character of the Wagram vines. Up to 60 years old, deep roots, and southern exposure create a wine with dense structure and vibrant energy. The aroma entices with passion fruit, spicy herbs, and orange zest. On the palate, juicy minerality, yellow tropical fruits, and a long, multi-layered finish you could happily sink into.
