Description
Belair-Monange 2018 is a poised and powerful Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé that captures the richness and elegance of a great Right Bank vintage. Crafted primarily from Merlot with a touch of Cabernet Franc, it delivers both immediate pleasure and remarkable aging potential. With deep historical roots on some of Saint-Émilion’s finest limestone slopes, this wine combines classical terroir with meticulous modern winemaking.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Belair-Monange shows a medium to deep garnet-purple hue, signaling both concentration and youthful energy. The nose is expressive and layered: ripe black cherry compote, stewed plums and boysenberry intertwine with Indian spices, rose oil, Ceylon tea and wild garrigue, all underpinned by a subtle note of cultivated earth.
On the palate, this is a rich, seductive, full-bodied Bordeaux with a velvety, almost creamy texture. Generous black fruit preserves and exotic spice notes unfold in waves, framed by fine-grained, plush tannins and a beautifully integrated freshness that keeps everything in balance. The finish is long, perfumed and persistent, echoing floral and savory nuances. Already hedonistic and enjoyable in its youth, it will gain complexity with 4–5 years of cellaring and has the structure to evolve gracefully for 25 years or more.
Production
Belair-Monange is rooted in some of Saint-Émilion’s most prized terroir, dominated by limestone and clay-limestone soils that give both finesse and mineral tension to the wines. The vineyards, planted mainly to Merlot with a smaller proportion of Cabernet Franc, are carefully tended, with rigorous canopy management and selective harvesting by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe clusters reach the cellar. Vinification is precise and traditional with modern refinement: gentle extraction to preserve fruit purity, temperature-controlled fermentations, and aging in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new) to add depth, polish the tannins and enhance the wine’s aromatic complexity without overwhelming its sense of place.
Food & Serving
Belair-Monange 2018 is a superb match for classic dishes such as roasted lamb, dry-aged ribeye, slow-braised beef cheeks, or duck with red wine and cherry sauce. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-infused dishes, wild mushroom risotto, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Parmigiano-Reggiano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. If opened young, decant for 1–2 hours to allow the aromatics and texture to fully unfurl; older bottles will require a more delicate, shorter decant to separate sediment and preserve their evolved bouquet.
Producer
Château Belair-Monange, situated on the high limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion, is one of the appellation’s historic estates, with viticultural origins dating back centuries. Now under the stewardship of the famed J.P. Moueix family, it has been meticulously restored and elevated to sit among the most respected properties on Bordeaux’s Right Bank. The union of Château Belair with Château Magdelaine and the addition of “Monange” (in honor of the Moueix family matriarch) marked a new era for the estate. Today, Belair-Monange is celebrated for producing refined, ageworthy wines that showcase the elegance and depth of Saint-Émilion’s limestone terroirs, consistently earning high critical acclaim and a loyal following among collectors worldwide.
