Description
Belair-Monange 2017 is a poised and deeply expressive Saint-Émilion from one of Bordeaux’s most historic limestone plateaus. Blending 98% Merlot with 2% Cabernet Franc, it captures the elegance, purity and energy that define top Right Bank wines in a cooler, more classical vintage. This is a wine that combines immediate seduction with the structure and finesse to age gracefully for years.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Belair-Monange shows a medium to deep garnet-purple hue, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is vibrant and lifted, leaping from the glass with wild blueberries, Morello cherries, baked plums and black raspberries, layered with touches of Indian spice, lavender, garrigue, tobacco leaf and a subtle twist of licorice.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a beautiful sense of drive and precision. The black and blue fruits feel almost playful, dancing across the mid-palate with a core of juicy freshness that keeps everything bright and refined. The tannins are ripe and velvety, framing the fruit without ever dominating, while the acidity provides a long, pulsing finish that lingers with spice, florals and a faintly savory tobacco note. Already irresistibly drinkable, this 2017 has the structure and balance to evolve gracefully over 10–20 years, gaining further complexity and silkiness in bottle.
Production
Belair-Monange is rooted in the prized limestone plateau and clay-limestone slopes of Saint-Émilion, terroirs renowned for producing Merlot of great precision, perfume and longevity. The 2017 vintage is composed of 98% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, sourced from meticulously tended vines harvested by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit is selected. In the cellar, gentle vinification is used to preserve purity and terroir expression, with fermentation in temperature-controlled vats followed by aging in French oak barrels. This careful, detail-driven approach allows the estate to craft a wine that is both profoundly Saint-Émilion and unmistakably Belair-Monange—refined, structured and built for the long term.
Food & Serving
Belair-Monange 2017 is a natural partner for refined dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, duck breast with cherry or plum accents, and veal or pork tenderloin with wild mushrooms. It also shines alongside truffle dishes, hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda, and hearty lentil or mushroom-based vegetarian plates. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression; decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth helps open the aromatics and soften the tannins. With additional bottle age, a shorter decant or simply pouring into large Bordeaux stems will be enough to let the wine show its full complexity.
Producer
Château Belair-Monange is one of the historic names of Saint-Émilion, with vine-growing history on its limestone plateau dating back centuries. Today it belongs to the Moueix family, famed for their stewardship of some of the Right Bank’s most important estates, and holds the prestigious rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé. Under their guidance, Belair-Monange has undergone a quiet renaissance, unifying exceptional parcels on the plateau and coteau and refining both vineyard and cellar practices. The result is a series of wines that are now considered among the most exciting in Saint-Émilion, celebrated for their precision, minerality and aging potential.
