Description

Belair-Monange 2012 is a distinguished Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé that showcases some of the oldest vines in all of Bordeaux, including a remarkable parcel planted in 1905. Produced in very limited quantities, this vintage combines depth, elegance and power in a way that honours its exceptional limestone terroir. Under the stewardship of the Moueix family, the estate has been revitalized, and 2012 stands as a beautiful example of the château’s modern renaissance.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2012 Belair-Monange presents a deep ruby to purple hue, still vibrant and youthful in tone. The nose is complex and refined, opening with pure notes of red and black fruits—think black cherry, plum and wild raspberry—layered with crushed stone, minerals, subtle violet, graphite and a touch of spice from well-integrated oak. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with a silky yet structured mouthfeel and impressive concentration. The mineral imprint of the limestone plateau is unmistakable, giving a sense of tension and lift to the ripe fruit. Flavours of blackcurrant, plum, red cherry and a hint of licorice mingle with notes of tobacco leaf and fine cedar. Tannins are polished but present, supporting a long, persistent finish that carries both fruit and stone-driven complexity. With its balance of richness, freshness and structure, this 2012 has excellent aging potential and should continue to evolve gracefully for 20 years or more, while already being approachable with a proper decant.

Production
Belair-Monange sits on the prized limestone plateau and slopes of Saint-Émilion, where clay-limestone soils and excellent drainage give wines of finesse, minerality and longevity. The old vines, including parcels dating back to 1905, are predominantly Merlot with a complement of Cabernet Franc, carefully tended and typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, followed by meticulous sorting to ensure only the best berries are used. Vinification is carried out in temperature-controlled vats to preserve purity of fruit and terroir expression, and the wine is then aged in French oak barrels, a significant portion of which are new, for an extended period to refine the tannins and build complexity without overwhelming the natural character of the vineyard.

Food & Serving
This 2012 Belair-Monange is an excellent partner to classic dishes from the French table: roasted or grilled lamb, beef ribeye, duck breast, veal with morels or game birds all highlight its depth and structure. It also pairs beautifully with earthy flavours such as truffle, wild mushrooms, lentil dishes and aged hard cheeses like Comté or matured Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase its aromatics and balance; decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, especially in its current stage of development, to allow the wine to open fully and soften the youthful structure.

Producer
Château Belair-Monange is one of the historic estates of Saint-Émilion, with vine roots stretching back centuries on the appellation’s famed limestone plateau. Formerly known as Château Belair, the property entered a new era in 2008 when it was acquired and revitalized by the renowned Moueix family, proprietors and guardians of some of the Right Bank’s most illustrious names. Under Christian Moueix and his son Edouard, Belair-Monange has undergone significant investment in the vineyard and cellar, and was further strengthened by the integration of the neighbouring Château Magdelaine. Today, it is recognised as one of the key references of Saint-Émilion, consistently earning critical acclaim for wines that unite depth, elegance and a striking sense of place.
