Description

Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) 2020 is a poised, classically styled Saint-Émilion from one of the appellation’s most coveted limestone hillsides. Marrying dark, seductive fruit with a finely etched mineral backbone, it offers both immediate charm and serious cellar potential. This cuvée marks the closing of a stylistic chapter for the estate, vinified by Nicolas Thienpont’s team with the final blend refined by the new generation, Joséphine Duffau.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) is deep ruby-purple with an almost opaque core, hinting at its concentration and youth. The nose opens with aromas of dark berries and ripe plum, layered with black licorice, crushed rose petals and an undercurrent of exotic spice, all subtly framed by creamy, high-quality new oak. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, with a generous, ripe core of dark fruit energized by lively acidity. The limestone terroir shows through in its chalky, finely grained tannic structure, giving the wine both tension and finesse. Despite its richness, the wine remains measured and somewhat reserved at this early stage, suggesting it will unfurl beautifully with time in bottle. Well-made and balanced, it has very good aging potential: expect it to hit its stride after 7–10 years and continue evolving gracefully for 20 years or more in a good cellar.

Production
The 2020 Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) comes from prime limestone and clay-limestone slopes on the historic plateau of Saint-Émilion, a terroir famed for delivering both power and elegance. The vineyard is planted predominantly to Merlot with a smaller but important proportion of Cabernet Franc, and the fruit is harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, to capture optimal ripeness and preserve freshness. Vinification for the 2020 vintage was overseen by Nicolas Thienpont and his team, who favor careful extraction, temperature control and precision in the cellar to highlight the estate’s mineral signature. The final blend—shaped by Joséphine Duffau—comprises 81% Merlot and 19% Cabernet Franc, matured in French oak (including a significant proportion of new barrels) to integrate structure and add subtle creamy and spicy nuances without overwhelming the fruit.

Food & Serving
This refined Saint-Émilion is a natural partner for classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, duck breast, or veal in truffle jus. It also pairs beautifully with richer mushroom dishes, game birds, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or old Gouda, where its dark fruit and chalky structure can really shine. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to preserve freshness and aromatic complexity; in its youth, decant for 1–2 hours to soften the tannins and allow the floral and mineral notes to emerge. As the wine matures, a shorter decant primarily for sediment will be sufficient.

Producer
Château Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) is one of Saint-Émilion’s most illustrious crus, long recognized for the singular quality of its limestone plateau terroir and its ability to produce wines of both depth and refinement. Classified among the top tier of Saint-Émilion estates, it has built a reputation for ageworthy, characterful wines that express their site with clarity. Over the years, stewardship by experienced consultants and, more recently, the involvement of Joséphine Duffau have brought renewed energy and precision, ensuring the château remains a benchmark property on Bordeaux’s Right Bank while honoring its historic style.
