Description

Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) 2019 in magnum captures the elegance and energy that have made this historic Saint-Émilion estate a connoisseur’s favorite. This is a finely etched, medium to full-bodied Bordeaux that marries wild, pure fruit with the limestone-driven precision of its fabled terroir. Bottled in 1.5 L, it offers not only extra aging potential but also a beautifully elevated experience at the table or in the cellar.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue that hints at both concentration and freshness. The nose is expressive and layered, with aromas of wild blueberries and ripe raspberries lifted by delicate notes of violets and rose petals. Subtle forest floor and underbrush tones add complexity, while a touch of creamy new oak is seamlessly integrated rather than dominant. On the palate, this is supple yet structured, with a smooth, layered texture and a lively core of bright, pure fruit. The clear, racy acidity keeps the wine tense and vibrant, balancing the richness of the mid-palate. Fine, powdery tannins frame the fruit elegantly, leading to a long, precise finish marked by a distinctive, saline edge that speaks to its limestone plateau origins. In magnum format, this 2019 has excellent aging potential: expect it to evolve gracefully over 15–25 years, gaining further complexity while retaining its freshness and definition.

Production
Perched on Saint-Émilion’s renowned limestone plateau, Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) benefits from chalky soils with excellent drainage and a cool substratum that naturally preserves acidity and aromatic lift. The vineyard is dominated by Merlot with a significant proportion of Cabernet Franc, both thriving on the thin clay-limestone topsoil over solid rock, which imparts the wine’s signature tension and mineral backbone. Grapes are typically harvested by hand in small parcels at optimal ripeness to preserve purity and avoid oxidation. In the cellar, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to emphasize finesse over power. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new, allowing the creamy oak nuances to frame—rather than overshadow—the vibrant fruit and terroir expression.

Food & Serving
This 2019 Saint-Émilion is an ideal partner for classic dishes such as roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, or veal with truffle jus. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, wild mushrooms, and aged hard cheeses, which echo its forest floor and mineral nuances. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. In magnum, it benefits from a bit of air: decant for 1–2 hours in its youth to soften the tannins and fully release the floral and red-fruited bouquet; older bottles will need a gentler, shorter decant mainly to remove any sediment.

Producer
Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) is a historic, family-associated estate on the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion, long revered by Bordeaux enthusiasts for its classically styled, ageworthy reds. Its privileged position on some of the appellation’s finest calcaire terroir has made it one of the most distinctive Saint-Émilion crus, often producing wines of remarkable energy, perfume, and mineral precision. Over the years, the château has garnered strong critical acclaim, with several vintages considered among the greats of Right Bank Bordeaux. Today, Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) is recognized as a reference point for those seeking refined, terroir-driven Saint-Émilion that combines depth and complexity with elegance and longevity.
