Description
Luigi Baudana Barolo Cerretta 2020 is a striking, terroir-driven Barolo from the heart of Serralunga d’Alba, one of the most powerful communes in the appellation. Drawn from the renowned Cerretta cru, it marries bold dark fruit with the region’s signature minerality and structure. This bottling captures the historic soul of Barolo while showcasing the refinement and clarity that define modern Piedmont.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Cerretta shows a deep garnet core with classic Nebbiolo transparency at the rim. The nose is intense and layered: dark cherries and blackcurrants meet dried apricot, crushed violets, iron-rich earth and hints of iron ore and stone, giving a distinctly Serralunga edge. Subtle notes of nutmeg, sweet baking spice and a touch of dried rose emerge with air.
On the palate, this Barolo is firmly structured yet remarkably poised. Dominant dark fruit—blackberry, blackcurrant and macerated cherry—is woven with savory tones of iron, dried herbs and crushed rock. The tannins are fine-grained, chalky and persistent, driving a long, dry finish that remains lifted by ample, ripe fruit. Still youthful, it will gain further complexity over the next decade or more and can be cellared comfortably for 15–20 years, depending on your preference for freshness versus tertiary development.
Production
Cerretta is a storied vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, famed for its compact, limestone-rich marl and iron-laden soils that naturally yield powerful, structured Barolo. The Nebbiolo grapes for this wine are carefully hand-harvested to ensure optimal ripeness and meticulous selection in the vineyard. In the cellar, vinification follows a traditional yet sensitive approach: extended maceration on the skins to extract aromatics and structure, followed by aging in large, neutral oak casks to preserve the purity of fruit and the distinctive mineral character of Cerretta. The result is a Barolo that speaks clearly of place, with no excess makeup from oak.
Food & Serving
This Barolo is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes: think braised beef or veal shank, slow-cooked lamb, game birds, truffle dishes, and aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. It also shines alongside traditional Piedmontese cuisine—tajarin with ragù, brasato al Barolo, and mushroom-based dishes. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F); if opened in its youth, decant for 1–2 hours to allow the tannins to soften and the aromatic complexity to fully unfold. Older bottles will need a gentler, shorter decant to remove sediment and awaken the wine.
