Description
Batasiolo Barbera d'Asti Sabri 2023 is a vibrant, fruit-forward red from one of Piedmont’s most respected Barbera specialists. Crafted to showcase Barbera’s natural freshness and charm, this wine balances generous red fruit with the region’s signature liveliness and finesse. It draws on the long-standing Barbera tradition in Asti, where the grape has been cultivated for centuries as one of Piedmont’s most beloved everyday-quality-meets-serious-wine reds.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Sabri 2023 shows a bright, youthful ruby-red color with violet reflections at the rim, signaling its freshness and energy. The nose is expressive and inviting, offering notes of juicy cherry, ripe red plum and wild berries, layered with hints of violet, subtle spice, and a touch of dried herbs.
On the palate, this Barbera is medium-bodied yet generous, with a core of red and black cherry, raspberry and plum supported by Barbera’s characteristic, mouthwatering acidity. Soft, integrated tannins give it a supple, approachable structure, while a gentle hint of spice and mineral notes add depth on the finish. The wine is crafted to be enjoyed young and vibrant, but it will comfortably evolve over the next 3–5 years, gaining a bit more softness and complexity while retaining its bright fruit.
Production
The grapes for Batasiolo Barbera d'Asti Sabri 2023 come from selected vineyards in the rolling hills of Asti in Piedmont, where calcareous-clay soils and a continental climate with warm days and cool nights help Barbera achieve excellent ripeness while preserving acidity. Harvest is typically carried out when the grapes reach optimal phenolic maturity, often with careful parcel selection to ensure balance and purity of fruit. In the cellar, the must is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel to protect the grape’s fresh, aromatic character, followed by a period of maturation—primarily in stainless steel or large neutral vessels—to soften the wine and harmonize flavors without masking Barbera’s naturally vivid fruit profile.
Food & Serving
Sabri 2023 is a versatile food wine, pairing beautifully with classic Italian dishes such as tomato-based pastas, pizza, lasagne, grilled sausages, and roast chicken. It also complements charcuterie, medium-aged cheeses, mushroom risotto, and lighter red meat dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C to highlight its freshness and aromatic lift. Decanting is not strictly necessary for this youthful vintage, but a brief 15–20 minutes in a carafe can help open up the aromatics if you prefer a more expressive glass.
Producer
Beni di Batasiolo is a family-owned estate based in La Morra, at the heart of Piedmont’s Langhe hills, with a history that traces back to the late 19th century. Over time, the estate has grown to encompass several prized vineyard sites, establishing Batasiolo as a key reference for both traditional Piedmontese varieties and terroir-driven expressions. While internationally recognized for its Barolo, Batasiolo also has a strong reputation for producing high-quality Barbera that captures the everyday elegance and authenticity of the region. Their commitment to careful vineyard management and thoughtful, modern winemaking has earned them a solid standing among Piedmont producers, with wines that consistently deliver both typicity and value.
