Babylonstoren Nebukadnesar 2023 is the flagship red from one of South Africa’s most admired estates, crafted to capture the very best of Simonsberg’s terroir. Named after the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar, this prestige cuvée blends power, finesse, and complexity in a style that reflects both ambition and heritage.

Tasting Notes
Deep, concentrated, and vividly expressive in the glass, Nebukadnesar 2023 opens with intense aromas of blackcurrant, dark cherries, plums, and blackberries, lifted by notes of cedar, dark chocolate, tobacco, and exotic spice. It immediately feels layered and polished, with generous fruit framed by freshness and a refined oak influence. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and beautifully structured, with silky tannins and excellent balance between ripe fruit, savoury depth, and vibrant acidity. The finish is long and evolving, revealing hints of coffee, graphite, and warming spices. While already impressive, it has the concentration and structure to age gracefully over several years.

Production
The wine comes from Babylonstoren’s vineyards in the Western Cape, where the Simonsberg mountains provide a distinctive terroir shaped by diverse soils, cooling influences, and strong natural expression. The blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec is selected to bring together structure, aromatic lift, and depth. Vinification is focused on preserving purity of fruit while building complexity through careful extraction and oak maturation.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for beef, lamb, venison, and rich, flavourful cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C for the best expression, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if drinking young, to let the wine open fully and show its layered aromatics and texture.
