Description

Avignonesi Nobile di Montepulciano Sangiovese 2022 is a vibrant, terroir-driven expression of one of Tuscany’s most historic appellations. Crafted from 100% Sangiovese (locally known as Prugnolo Gentile), this red wine balances purity of fruit with the elegance and finesse that have made Vino Nobile di Montepulciano a benchmark for centuries. It’s a sophisticated yet approachable Tuscan red that shines equally well on a weekday table or alongside special-occasion cuisine. As a pioneer of organic and biodynamic viticulture in Montepulciano, Avignonesi is known for producing wines with a strong sense of place and exceptional balance. The 2022 vintage highlights the estate’s commitment to gentle, precise winemaking: ripe, expressive Sangiovese, judicious oak use, and a style that privileges freshness over heaviness. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is one of Tuscany’s oldest and most prestigious DOCG appellations, celebrated since the Renaissance for its “noble” character and age-worthy structure.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Avignonesi Nobile di Montepulciano 2022 typically shows a luminous ruby-red color with garnet reflections at the rim, hinting at its classic Sangiovese profile. The nose is inviting and layered, with ripe red cherries, wild strawberries, and plum weaving together with notes of violet, dried herbs, and a subtle spice from oak aging—think hints of sweet tobacco, cedar, and a touch of clove or cinnamon. On the palate, this is medium-bodied yet structured, with bright, juicy red fruit at the core—cherry, raspberry, and red currant—supported by refined tannins and a lively, food-friendly acidity. Earthy undertones, such as dried leaves, leather, and a faint mineral edge, add complexity as the wine opens in the glass. The finish is long and graceful, with lingering red fruit and a delicate savory note that invites another sip. While the 2022 is already enjoyable in its youth for its freshness and aromatics, the fine tannic backbone and acidity suggest a solid aging potential of about 6–10 years from vintage, during which it will gain more tertiary nuances of leather, tobacco and forest floor.

Production
Avignonesi’s vineyards in Montepulciano are rooted in a mosaic of clay, sand, and limestone-rich soils, with varying exposures and elevations that contribute complexity and finesse to the final blend. The estate farms organically and biodynamically, focusing on soil health and biodiversity to express Sangiovese’s truest character. Grapes are typically harvested by hand, allowing for rigorous selection of only the healthiest, ripest bunches. In the cellar, fermentation usually takes place in temperature-controlled tanks with native or carefully selected yeasts, followed by maturation in a combination of large Slavonian oak casks and smaller barrels to preserve fruit purity while adding gentle structure and spice. The result is a wine that captures both the elegance of Montepulciano’s terroir and the precision of modern, low-intervention winemaking.

Food & Serving
This Nobile di Montepulciano is an excellent match for classic Tuscan cuisine and hearty Mediterranean dishes. Pair it with bistecca alla fiorentina, grilled lamb chops, roast pork with herbs, or game birds such as guinea fowl. It also shines alongside rich pasta dishes like pappardelle al ragù, lasagna, mushroom risotto, and aged pecorino or other hard Italian cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and freshness. For young vintages like 2022, a short decant of 30–45 minutes helps the wine open up and soften the tannins, though it will also evolve nicely in the glass over the course of a meal.

Producer
Avignonesi is one of the reference estates of Montepulciano and a leading name in Tuscan wine. Founded in the 19th century and revitalized under new ownership in the 21st, the winery has become a flagship for organic and biodynamic viticulture in the region, with an unwavering focus on Sangiovese. Its vineyards, spread across some of the best sites in the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, have helped redefine the appellation’s style toward greater finesse, transparency and terroir expression. Avignonesi is widely respected for its research on Sangiovese clones, its conversion to fully organic and biodynamic farming, and a portfolio that consistently earns strong critical acclaim, positioning it among the most important and forward-thinking producers in Tuscany.
