Description
Avignonesi 50 & 50 Capannelle Magnum 2021 is a benchmark Tuscan red that brings together two great estates and two noble grapes in perfect balance. This 1.5L magnum format is ideal for celebratory tables, showcasing the harmony between silky Merlot and vibrant Sangiovese at its finest. Born from friendship and curiosity, it has become one of Tuscany’s most iconic collaborative wines.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 50 & 50 shows a deep, intense ruby colour with youthful violet reflections, underlining its energy and concentration. The nose opens with ripe black cherries, plum and wild berries, followed by layers of dried rose, violet, sweet tobacco, cedar, and a touch of cocoa and spice from careful oak aging.
On the palate, it is polished and generous, combining the plush, velvety texture of Merlot with the firm backbone and vibrant acidity of Sangiovese. Flavours of dark cherry, blackberry and redcurrant are framed by notes of licorice, fine vanilla, Mediterranean herbs and a hint of graphite. The tannins are refined yet present, giving structure without harshness, and the finish is long, savoury and elegant. In magnum, this 2021 has excellent aging potential: already approachable with a good decant, but capable of evolving gracefully over 12–18 years, gaining complexity and tertiary notes of leather, truffle and dried flowers.
Production
50 & 50 is crafted from selected Merlot parcels at Capannelle in Chianti Classico and Sangiovese from Avignonesi’s high-quality vineyards in the Montepulciano area of Tuscany. These sites benefit from a mix of clay-limestone and marl soils, good elevation and marked diurnal temperature swings, which contribute both ripeness and aromatic freshness. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested at optimal maturity, then vinified separately to respect the character of each variety: typically fermented in temperature-controlled tanks with gentle extraction to preserve finesse. After fermentation, the wines are aged in fine oak (often French barriques and/or large casks) for an extended period, allowing tannins to integrate and complexity to build, before the final 50/50 blend is assembled and given additional time in bottle prior to release.
Food & Serving
This magnum shines alongside refined yet flavourful dishes such as Tuscan bistecca alla fiorentina, roasted lamb with herbs, braised short ribs, game birds, truffle pasta or aged pecorino and Parmigiano-Reggiano. It also pairs beautifully with rich mushroom dishes and slow-cooked ragù. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase both aromatics and structure. Given its youth and concentration in the 2021 vintage, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, especially from magnum, to allow the wine to open and reveal its full complexity.
Producer
50 & 50 was first created in 1988 as a spontaneous experiment during a festive dinner between the then-owners of Avignonesi in Montepulciano and Capannelle in Chianti Classico. As they blended their respective Sangiovese and Merlot in equal parts, they discovered a combination that was greater than the sum of its parts, and a cult Tuscan collaboration was born. Avignonesi, known as a quality leader in Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, has long been a reference for Sangiovese purity and terroir expression, while Capannelle is respected for its precision and elegance in Chianti Classico and Bordeaux-inspired reds. Together, they have made 50 & 50 one of the most recognisable and collectible Super Tuscan-style wines, celebrated for its consistency, personality and age-worthiness vintage after vintage.
