Description

Avignonesi 50 & 50 Capannelle 2021 is a benchmark Tuscan red that unites two of the region’s most respected estates in a single, seamless blend. Crafted equally from Merlot and Sangiovese, it combines the plush richness of international style with the energy and finesse of classic Chianti terroir. Born in 1988 from a spontaneous blending experiment over a festive dinner, 50 & 50 has since become one of Tuscany’s most iconic ‘friendship wines,’ celebrated for its balance, depth, and age‑worthy elegance.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Avignonesi 50 & 50 Capannelle shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with garnet reflections at the rim, hinting at both youth and structure. The nose opens with ripe black cherry, wild berries, and plum from the Merlot, intertwined with Sangiovese’s tell‑tale notes of red currant, dried herbs, and a touch of blood orange. Subtle layers of violet, cedar, tobacco leaf, and sweet spices emerge with air, supported by a fine mineral streak. On the palate, this wine is full‑bodied yet refined, with a velvety Merlot core wrapped in Sangiovese’s taut, mouthwatering frame. Juicy dark fruits, black cherry, and blackberry are lifted by red berry brightness, savory balsamic hints, and a slight earthy, graphite nuance. The tannins are polished but firm, promising excellent evolution, while the acidity keeps the wine fresh and precise. The finish is long and persistent, echoing spice, cocoa, and dried Mediterranean herbs. While already approachable in its youth, the 2021 has clear aging potential and should develop additional complexity over 10–15 years in a good cellar.

Production
50 & 50 is sourced from carefully selected vineyards belonging to Avignonesi in Montepulciano and Capannelle in the heart of Chianti Classico, two complementary terroirs that bring both ripeness and tension to the blend. The Sangiovese typically comes from higher‑altitude, well‑drained, limestone‑rich soils that enhance aromatic lift and acidity, while the Merlot benefits from slightly warmer sites with clay and marl that lend depth and richness. Grapes are picked by hand at optimal ripeness, with meticulous sorting to ensure only the finest clusters are used. Fermentation takes place in temperature‑controlled vessels, with gentle extraction to preserve finesse and aromatic purity, before the wine is matured in quality oak barrels to integrate tannins, add subtle spice, and build structure without overpowering the fruit. The final cuvée is blended at an equal 50/50 ratio, a stylistic hallmark that has defined this wine since its creation.

Food & Serving
Avignonesi 50 & 50 Capannelle 2021 is a natural partner for rich Tuscan cuisine and refined, flavorful dishes. It pairs beautifully with bistecca alla fiorentina, roast lamb with rosemary, wild boar ragù over pappardelle, and aged pecorino or other hard cheeses. It also complements truffle dishes, mushroom risotto, and slow‑braised beef or veal. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux-style glasses to allow the aromas to unfurl. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to soften the tannins and fully reveal its layered bouquet.

Producer
Avignonesi is one of the leading names in Tuscany, particularly renowned for its pioneering work in Montepulciano and its commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture. Founded in the 1970s and revitalized under new ownership in the 21st century, the estate has helped redefine the quality potential of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Tuscan reds more broadly. Capannelle, based in Gaiole in Chianti, is likewise a reference producer in Chianti Classico, known for precision, elegance, and age‑worthy wines. Their joint creation, 50 & 50, first released from the 1988 vintage, has become an emblematic Super Tuscan and a symbol of collaboration between two great terroirs and two visionary wineries, consistently garnering international acclaim and high critical ratings.

a classic Super Tuscan, first produced in 1988, and the idea is simple: half merlot and half sangiovese. Half of the grapes come from the producer Avignonesi in Cortona outside Montepulciano and half from Capanelle in Chianti Classico. Biodynamically grown, 18 months in barrique, and a wine that delivers truly great flavor and personality
