Description
The 2009 Ausone Double Magnum (3L) is a towering expression of Saint-Émilion, captured in one of Bordeaux’s most legendary vintages. Intensely concentrated yet remarkably pure, it marries power with precision in a way that only Ausone seems to achieve. Bottled in the rare 3-liter format and produced in tiny quantities, this is a collector’s centerpiece built for decades of evolution.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, 2009 Ausone shows a dense, opaque purple core that clings to the sides, hinting at its concentration and youthfulness, even with age. The nose is strikingly mineral from the outset, with notes of crushed limestone, powdered chalk, and wet stone wrapped around layers of wild blue, red, and black fruits—think blueberry, black cherry, plum, and blackberry. Subtle hints of violets, graphite, licorice, and fine spice emerge with air, adding complexity and depth.
On the palate, the wine is extravagant and rich, yet finely etched. The texture is lush and almost velvety—unusually accessible for a young Ausone—while the structure remains tightly knit, with vibrant acidity and beautifully polished tannins. There is a palpable sense of energy and minerality that lifts the ripe fruit, giving it tension and precision rather than heaviness. The finish is long, layered, and persistent, leaving impressions of dark fruit, stone, and floral notes. In this 3L format, the aging potential is outstanding; properly stored, it will continue to develop from 2020 and easily into 2060 and beyond, gaining even more nuance and aromatic complexity.
Production
Château Ausone is perched on the limestone slopes of Saint-Émilion, where its terraced vineyards overlook the medieval town below. The terroir is dominated by hard limestone and clay-limestone soils, which impart the hallmark minerality and tension that define Ausone. The blend is typically dominated by Cabernet Franc with a significant proportion of Merlot, sourced from old vines that are meticulously tended and harvested by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy clusters are selected. Vinification is carried out with great precision: fermentation often takes place in small temperature-controlled vats, followed by a long, gentle maceration to extract fine tannins and color without sacrificing elegance. The wine is then aged in a high proportion of new French oak barrels, where it slowly integrates its structure, minerality, and opulent fruit into a seamless whole before being bottled—only in very limited quantities, especially in large formats such as this Double Magnum.
Food & Serving
This 2009 Ausone is best matched with refined, richly flavored dishes that can stand up to its depth and structure. Classic pairings include roasted or grilled lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, venison, or other game dishes, as well as truffle-infused cuisine and earthy mushroom preparations. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to allow the aromatics to unfold fully. For a wine of this concentration and youth in a 3L format, decanting is highly recommended—at least 2–3 hours in advance for current drinking, and even longer if opened on the earlier side of its drinking window.
Producer
Château Ausone is one of Bordeaux’s most revered estates, classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé A in Saint-Émilion and long considered among the absolute pinnacle of Right Bank producers. Named after the Roman poet Ausonius, the estate’s history stretches back centuries, with vineyards that have been cultivated on these limestone slopes since antiquity. Under the stewardship of Alain Vauthier, Ausone has reached new heights, producing wines that are consistently among the most sought-after in the world. Known for their intensity, longevity, and unmistakable limestone-driven minerality, the wines of Ausone are benchmarks for Saint-Émilion and are routinely celebrated by critics and collectors alike—particularly in monumental vintages such as 2009.
