Description
Ar.Pe.Pe’s Valtellina Superiore Nebbiolo Il Pettirosso is a pure, hand-crafted expression of one of Italy’s most distinctive mountain wine regions. Made entirely from Nebbiolo and shaped by a family winemaking tradition dating back to 1860, it reflects both the precision of the producer and the character of Valtellina’s unique terroir.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this is a graceful red with the poised structure and luminous character Nebbiolo lovers expect. The bouquet evokes the Valtellina landscape itself, with lifted notes of red berries, delicate floral nuances, and a subtle earthy edge.
On the palate, it is defined by freshness, fine tannins, and a refined mineral backbone, with red-fruited flavors unfolding in a savory, mountain-wine style. Its balance and architectural frame suggest excellent aging potential, rewarding cellaring with greater complexity and depth over time.
Production
The grapes come from Valtellina, a steep Alpine terroir in Lombardy where viticulture remains largely manual and intensely labor-intensive. Ar.Pe.Pe allows the vineyard and vintage to dictate the rhythm of production, with long maceration over 71 days in 50 hl wooden casks, followed by 12 months of aging in large barrels, steel, and bottle to preserve purity and site expression.
Food & Serving
Serve this wine with roasted poultry, game birds, porcini mushroom dishes, braised veal, or aged Alpine cheeses. A serving temperature of 16–18°C is ideal, and a brief decant can help open the aromatics, especially in its youth.
Producer
Ar.Pe.Pe is one of Valtellina’s benchmark producers, a family winery rooted in the region since 1860 and closely associated with the revival and prestige of Nebbiolo in northern Lombardy. Known for its meticulous, traditional approach and deep respect for terroir, the estate has earned a strong reputation for producing some of the most authentic and expressive wines in the appellation.
