Ar.Pe.Pe’s Valtellina Superiore Inferno Sesto Canto Riserva 2018 is a striking expression of Nebbiolo from one of Lombardy’s most dramatic mountain terroirs. Crafted from hillside vineyards in the renowned Inferno subzone, it combines tension, perfume, and mineral depth with the kind of character that only high-altitude Valtellina can deliver. Inspired by Arturo’s passion for rally racing and the wild energy of this landscape, it carries both a sense of place and a powerful personal story.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a translucent garnet hue with brick-tinged reflections, hinting at its Nebbiolo lineage and mountain finesse. The nose is expected to be highly aromatic, with red cherry, wild berries, dried rose, alpine herbs, spice, and subtle earthy and mineral nuances.
On the palate, this is likely to be precise and structured, with firm but refined tannins, vibrant acidity, and a savory core that reflects the rugged Inferno slopes. The finish should be long and mineral-driven, with enough backbone to support further bottle age; like many serious Valtellina Riserva wines, it has strong aging potential and will likely gain complexity over time.
Production
The vineyards sit around 450 meters above sea level in the third curve of the so-called Inferno Circuit, an evocative site whose steep, dramatic slopes help shape the wine’s intense personality. Valtellina’s alpine terroir, with its stony soils and pronounced diurnal shifts, is ideal for Nebbiolo, allowing slow ripening and the development of aromatic detail. The Riserva designation suggests careful selection and extended maturation before release, with vinification aimed at preserving purity, structure, and the distinctive mountain character of the fruit.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with richly flavored dishes such as braised veal, osso buco, game birds, roast lamb, mushroom risotto, and aged cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if drinking young to help the aromatics open and the tannins soften.
Producer
Ar.Pe.Pe. is one of the reference producers in Valtellina, celebrated for its traditional, terroir-focused approach to Nebbiolo from the steep mountain vineyards of Lombardy. The estate has earned a strong reputation for wines that balance elegance, longevity, and a deep sense of place, helping define the region on the international stage. Its commitment to classic methods and meticulous vineyard work has made it a benchmark for Valtellina Superiore and Riserva bottlings.
