Description
Ar.Pe.Pe Valtellina Superiore Grumello Riserva Buon Consiglio 2018 is a finely etched mountain Nebbiolo that marries alpine freshness with classic Italian elegance. Grown on dramatic stone terraces above Sondrio in Lombardy, this is a wine of transparency, precision, and remarkable finesse. Its Riserva status reflects extended aging and a traditional, patient approach that lets the unique Grumello terroir fully express itself.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Buon Consiglio shows a luminous, garnet-red hue with delicate brick reflections at the rim, typical of finely crafted Nebbiolo. The nose opens with lifted aromas of wild cherry, redcurrant, and rose petals, followed by hints of violet, dried herbs, alpine scrub, and subtle notes of spice and tobacco from long, gentle maturation.
On the palate, the wine is poised and linear, with vibrant acidity and finely woven tannins that are firm yet graceful. Flavors of sour cherry, cranberry, blood orange, and pomegranate are layered with earthy nuances, dried flowers, and a mineral, almost saline edge that speaks clearly of its steep, stone-terraced origins. The finish is long, savory, and precise. Already beautifully expressive, this Riserva has the structure and energy to develop further complexity over the next 10–15 years in a good cellar.
Production
Buon Consiglio is sourced from the Grumello subzone of Valtellina Superiore, where Nebbiolo (locally called Chiavennasca) clings to steep, south-facing terraces at around 370 meters above sea level. The vineyards rise above the Ca’ Bianca district, supported by impressive dry-stone walls that can reach over seven meters high, capturing sunlight and radiating warmth back to the vines in this cool alpine climate. Harvest is carried out by hand due to the extreme slopes, with careful selection of perfectly ripe, healthy grapes. In classic Ar.Pe.Pe fashion, fermentation is slow and gentle, with extended maceration to extract fine tannins rather than power, followed by long aging in large neutral casks and bottle to preserve purity, elegance, and a clear expression of terroir.
Food & Serving
This refined mountain Nebbiolo is a natural partner for dishes that highlight its aromatic complexity and bright structure. Think mushroom risotto, veal or pork loin with herbs, game birds, braised rabbit, or alpine cheeses such as aged Fontina and Bitto. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-based dishes and slow-cooked ragù over polenta or fresh pasta. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in youth to allow the floral and spicy nuances to unfold, while older bottles should be decanted gently just before serving to separate any sediment.
Producer
Ar.Pe.Pe (Arpepe) is one of Valtellina’s benchmark producers, a family-run estate that has played a key role in preserving and elevating the reputation of Nebbiolo from this dramatic alpine region. Founded by the Pelizzatti Perego family, the estate is known for its unwavering commitment to traditional methods, heroic viticulture on steep terraces, and long aging in large old casks. Working exclusively with Nebbiolo in the high valleys of Lombardy, Ar.Pe.Pe has become a reference point for elegant, ageworthy mountain wines that stand proudly alongside the great Nebbiolos of Italy, while remaining unmistakably true to their Valtellina origins.
