Description
Arnot-Roberts Gamay Noir from El Dorado is a bright, characterful California red that delivers all the charm of Gamay with a distinctly cool-climate edge. Sourced from the high-elevation Barsotti and Witters vineyards, it stands out for its granite-driven freshness, vibrant fruit, and the kind of finesse that has made Arnot-Roberts a cult favorite since the early 2000s.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a light ruby color, hinting at its delicate, energetic style. On the nose, it opens with blueberries, tart cherries, strawberry tart, potting soil, and subtle spice, giving it both fruitiness and earthy complexity.
The palate is fresh and lively, with red cherry, raspberry, blood orange, rose petals, and a cooling touch of mint on the finish. Juicy and easy to drink, it has enough structure and purity to evolve nicely over the next few years, though it’s just as appealing in its youthful, fruit-driven phase.
Production
This Gamay comes from the Barsotti and Witters vineyards in El Dorado, where cool high-altitude conditions and granite-rich soils give the vines an ideal setting. The fruit is typically harvested with care to preserve freshness and aromatic lift, and the winemaking is guided by Arnot-Roberts’ restrained, minimal-intervention approach, allowing the site and variety to shine.
Food & Serving
A versatile red like this works beautifully with roast chicken, charcuterie, grilled salmon, mushroom dishes, and lighter pork preparations. Serve it slightly chilled, around 14–16°C, and decanting is generally not necessary, though a short splash in a glass or carafe can help open up the aromatics.
Producer
Founded by Duncan Arnot and Nathan Roberts, Arnot-Roberts launched its Gamay in 2003 and has steadily refined the wine into one of the most distinctive examples of the variety in California. Known for their small-scale, site-focused wines, the duo has earned a strong reputation for producing bottles with precision, energy, and authenticity, especially from cool-climate vineyards across California.
