Arnot-Roberts California Red Wine 2021

Sourced from the steep Clajeux Vineyard in Sonoma County’s Chalk Hill region, it combines Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot in a wine that balances power with remarkable structure and finesse.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, dark-fruited core with a polished but restrained intensity. The nose opens with black fruit, cranberry, cedar, gingerbread, dried spices, and that classic pencil-shavings note that speaks to Cabernet’s more elegant side. The palate follows with layers of dark berry fruit, gamey depth, smoke, and grilled spice, all carried by a taut, linear frame. Despite its concentration, the wine feels lifted and mineral, finishing long, focused, and very refined. It has the structure to evolve beautifully over the coming years.

Production
The Clajeux Vineyard sits on a steep hillside in Sonoma County’s Chalk Hill region, where the soils and exposed site give the wine its pronounced mineral character and freshness. The vines were planted around 20 years ago and are farmed organically with great care. In 2021, Duncan Arnot and Nathan Roberts used about 30% whole clusters and matured the wine with 30% new oak, helping to add aromatic complexity, texture, and subtle spice without masking the vineyard character.

Food & Serving
This wine is an excellent match for roasted lamb, venison, grilled beef, or rich mushroom dishes, especially those with herbs and smoky seasoning. Serve it at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the aromatics and structure to open fully.
