Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 25 Anni 2021 is intense and opaque ruby with youthful purple reflections, hinting at its concentration and long life ahead. The nose is layered and expressive: expect dark blackberry and black cherry, framed by notes of plum compote, violet, and wild herbs, with well-integrated tones of cocoa, espresso, sweet spice, and a subtle balsamic lift from careful oak aging. On the palate, this is full-bodied and firmly structured, with Sagrantino’s famously powerful tannins given a polished, fine-grained edge. Dense black fruit – blackberry, blackcurrant, and morello cherry – sits at the core, supported by notes of licorice, tobacco, dark chocolate, and a touch of graphite minerality. The acidity is vibrant and keeps the wine focused and energetic despite its richness. Still very young, the 2021 is already impressive but has significant aging potential; it will evolve beautifully over 15–20 years or more, gaining complexity, tertiary notes, and greater harmony as the tannins gradually resolve.

Production
The Montefalco Sagrantino 25 Anni is sourced from some of Arnaldo Caprai’s best-exposed vineyards around Montefalco in Umbria, where clay-limestone soils, warm days, and cooler nights help Sagrantino achieve full ripeness while retaining freshness. Yields are kept low to concentrate flavor, and harvesting is typically done by hand, allowing for strict selection of only the healthiest, ripest bunches. After careful destemming and fermentation with extended maceration to extract color and structure, the wine is aged in small French oak barrels for an extended period (often around two years), followed by further refinement in bottle before release. The result is a wine that marries the grape’s natural power with precision and elegance.

Food & Serving
This is a serious food wine that shines with richly flavored dishes and robust textures. Think slow-braised lamb shanks, wild boar ragù, grilled or roasted red meats, venison, and other game, as well as deeply savory stews and dishes with earthy mushrooms or black truffle. Aged, hard cheeses such as mature Pecorino, Parmigiano Reggiano, or other long-aged Italian cheeses are excellent partners. Serve at around 18 °C (64 °F) in large-bowled glasses, and for the 2021 vintage, decanting for 2–3 hours is strongly recommended to soften the tannins and allow the aromatics to fully unfurl.

Founded in 1971 when Arnaldo Caprai purchased an estate near Montefalco, the winery has been at the forefront of reviving Sagrantino and elevating it to international recognition. Under the leadership of Arnaldo’s son, Marco Caprai, the estate invested heavily in clonal research, vineyard mapping, and modern winemaking, helping to define the contemporary style of Montefalco Sagrantino. The 25 Anni cuvée, created to mark the family’s 25th year at the estate, quickly became a reference point for the denomination and has garnered numerous top scores and awards from major wine critics. Today, Arnaldo Caprai is widely regarded as the flagship producer of Montefalco and a driving force in Umbria’s emergence as a serious fine-wine region.
