Description

Domaine Armand Rousseau is one of Burgundy’s most revered names, and this Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St. Jacques 1er Cru 2012 shows exactly why. Made from 100% Pinot Noir, it combines the site’s remarkable intensity with the house’s trademark restraint, finesse, and precision. With its Premier Cru pedigree and long reputation among collectors, this is a wine that speaks as much to history as it does to craftsmanship.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby colour, hinting at both concentration and elegance. The nose is layered and expressive, with red and dark berry fruit such as cherry, blackcurrant, and blackberry, lifted by floral notes, forest floor, spice, and a subtle mineral edge. The palate is beautifully balanced, with fine ripe tannins, fresh acidity, and a textured structure that gives the wine depth without weight. It has the kind of class and inner tension that suggests excellent aging potential, likely gaining complexity over time with notes of leather, tobacco, earth, and undergrowth.

Production
Clos St. Jacques is one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most admired Premier Cru sites, known for its excellent exposure and stony soils that help produce wines of both power and finesse. The 2012 vintage brought some weather challenges, but careful vineyard work resulted in grapes with excellent concentration and purity. Vinified in the traditional style associated with Domaine Armand Rousseau, the wine reflects both the character of the terroir and the estate’s meticulous approach to preserving fragrance, structure, and balance.

Food & Serving
This wine is a natural match for refined dishes such as roast duck, pigeon, veal, lamb, or game birds, as well as mushroom-based preparations and truffle-accented dishes. Serve it at around 16–18°C to best showcase its aromatics and texture. Decanting is recommended if opening young, though older bottles should be handled more gently to preserve their delicate nuance.

Producer
Domaine Armand Rousseau was founded in the early 20th century and has since become one of the benchmark producers of Gevrey-Chambertin and all of Burgundy. The estate is celebrated for its old-vine holdings, exceptional vineyard sites, and a style that balances depth with elegance. Over the decades, it has earned an outstanding reputation among critics and collectors alike, with wines that are consistently among the most sought-after in the region.
