Description
Argiolas Turriga 2021 Isola dei Nuraghi is one of Sardinia’s true icon wines, a powerful yet finely sculpted red that captures the soul of the island in the glass. Crafted from a blend of native red varieties including Bovale, Carignano and Malvasia Nera, it balances Mediterranean richness with remarkable elegance and depth. First released in the late 1980s as the estate’s flagship, Turriga has since become a benchmark for premium Sardinian reds and a reference point for collectors worldwide.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Turriga 2021 shows a deep, almost opaque ruby core with violet highlights that hint at its youth and concentration. The nose is intense and layered, opening with dark cherries, blackberries and plum compote, followed by notes of myrtle, Mediterranean herbs, sweet spices, licorice, cocoa and a subtle balsamic lift.
On the palate, this is a full-bodied, structured wine with ample yet polished tannins and a vibrant backbone of acidity that keeps the richness in check. Flavors of ripe black fruit, wild berries and dried flowers are wrapped in hints of tobacco, vanilla, dark chocolate and a touch of smoky minerality, reflecting both the native grapes and careful oak aging. The finish is long, savory and harmonious, suggesting excellent aging potential. With proper cellaring, the 2021 vintage should continue to evolve beautifully for 12–20 years, gaining tertiary complexity while retaining its core of fruit and freshness.
Production
Turriga is sourced from estate-owned vineyards around Serdiana in the southern part of Sardinia, an area shaped by sun-drenched slopes, poor rocky soils and cooling breezes from the nearby sea. These conditions, combined with low yields, naturally concentrate the grapes and highlight the character of the indigenous varieties. The fruit is harvested by hand, allowing strict selection of bunches both in the vineyard and at the winery. After destemming and gentle crushing, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks with extended maceration to extract color, aroma and fine tannins. The wine is then matured—traditionally for around 18 months—in French oak barriques, followed by additional bottle aging before release, ensuring integration of oak and fruit and the signature depth and complexity that define Turriga.
Food & Serving
Turriga 2021 is a natural partner for richly flavored Mediterranean dishes and hearty meat-based cuisine. It pairs beautifully with slow-braised lamb, roasted or grilled beef, game dishes, deeply flavored stews, aged Pecorino Sardo and mature hard cheeses. It also works well with dishes that incorporate wild herbs, mushrooms or truffles, which echo the wine’s earthy and balsamic notes. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux-style glasses to allow the aromas to fully unfold. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended in its youth to soften the tannins and open up the bouquet; older bottles can be decanted more gently to separate any sediment while preserving delicate tertiary aromas.

Over the decades, Argiolas has played a pivotal role in elevating the reputation of Sardinian wines on the international stage, with Turriga standing as its flagship and a symbol of the island’s potential for fine wine. The winery’s combination of traditional knowledge, careful vineyard work and modern oenological precision has earned it numerous accolades and a place among Italy’s most respected producers.
