Description
Argiano Solengo 2022 is a powerful and polished Super Tuscan from the hills of Montalcino, crafted to showcase both intensity and elegance. Conceived by legendary oenologist Giacomo Tachis, the mind behind Sassicaia and Tignanello, it has become one of Argiano’s flagship wines since its debut in 1995. Solengo — meaning “wild boar” in Italian — embodies strength, character and longevity, while remaining unmistakably Tuscan at heart.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Solengo 2022 shows a deep, almost opaque ruby-red core with youthful purple reflections at the rim, signaling concentration and vigor. The nose opens with dark, ripe blackberries and blackcurrants, followed by plum, violet, and subtle Mediterranean herbs. Layers of cedar, graphite, cocoa, and sweet spices from French oak add complexity without overwhelming the fruit.
On the palate, this is full-bodied and structured, with dense, ripe tannins that are firm yet finely textured. Flavors of cassis, black cherry, and blueberry are interwoven with notes of tobacco leaf, licorice, mocha, and a hint of balsamic. The acidity is vibrant, keeping the wine fresh and balanced despite its power, and the finish is long, savory, and slightly smoky. While already approachable with a bit of aeration, the 2022 has excellent aging potential: it will gain nuance and harmony over the next 8–15 years, and can evolve even longer in optimal cellar conditions.
Production
Solengo 2022 is typically a blend of international varieties—predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, complemented by grapes such as Petit Verdot and Sangiovese—sourced from Argiano’s estate vineyards in Montalcino. These vineyards sit on a mix of marl, limestone, and clay at varying altitudes, giving both richness and freshness to the fruit, with a climate moderated by sea breezes and strong diurnal temperature swings. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, sorted carefully, and fermented separately in temperature-controlled vats to preserve aromatics and structure. After maceration, the wine is blended and aged in French oak barriques (a high proportion new) for around 18 months, allowing tannins to refine and the different components to integrate, before further bottle aging prior to release.
Food & Serving
Argiano Solengo 2022 is a natural match for richly flavored dishes: bistecca alla fiorentina, roast or grilled beef, game meats such as venison or wild boar, slow-braised lamb, and mature hard cheeses like aged Pecorino Toscano or Parmigiano Reggiano. It also pairs beautifully with truffle dishes, mushroom ragù, or deeply flavored stews. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux-style glasses to fully express its aromatics and texture. Decant for 1–2 hours in its youth to soften the tannins and open up the bouquet; older bottles will require gentler, shorter decanting mainly to separate from sediment.
Producer
Argiano is one of Montalcino’s historic estates, with roots dating back to the late 16th century and a striking villa that has long been a landmark in southern Tuscany. While internationally renowned for its Brunello di Montalcino, Argiano has also been at the forefront of the Super Tuscan movement, and Solengo stands as a key expression of that innovation. The collaboration with famed oenologist Giacomo Tachis in the 1990s helped elevate the estate’s reputation, placing Solengo among the region’s most respected modern reds. Today, Argiano is known for its commitment to sustainable viticulture, refined winemaking, and wines that marry Tuscan identity with world-class craftsmanship.
