Description

Angelo Negro Roero Sudisfà Riserva 2021 is a refined Nebbiolo from the hills of Roero in Piemonte, crafted by one of the region’s benchmark producers. This is a wine for those who appreciate Barolo- and Barbaresco-level character, but with a more perfumed, silken expression and earlier approachability. The “Sudisfà” name (dialect for “satisfied”) is a nod to the family’s pride in this cuvée, which has become a reference point for Roero Nebbiolo.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Sudisfà Riserva shows a luminous garnet hue with brick reflections at the rim, typical for Nebbiolo. The nose opens with vivid aromas of wild cherries and redcurrant, followed by dried rose petals, violet, blood orange peel and hints of licorice, sweet spice and crushed stone. On the palate, it is elegant and finely etched, with a core of red berry fruit, pomegranate and tangy cherry framed by refined, vertical tannins. Notes of rosehip, anise, tobacco leaf and a subtle savory, earthy edge add depth and complexity. The acidity is fresh and linear, giving the wine lift and precision, while the finish is long, floral and slightly saline. 2021 offers both purity and structure, making this Riserva enjoyable now with air, but also well-suited to cellaring for 8–12 years, potentially longer in good conditions.

Production
The fruit for Roero Sudisfà Riserva comes from select Nebbiolo parcels in the sandy, fossil-rich hills of Roero in Piemonte, on the left bank of the Tanaro River. This terroir—lighter, more sandy and maritime-influenced than the heavier clays of the Langhe—gives Nebbiolo a more aromatic, finer-boned style. Grapes are harvested by hand, with strict selection in the vineyard and again at the winery to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy clusters are used. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled vats with an extended maceration on the skins to gently extract color, tannin and aromatic complexity. The wine is then aged as a Riserva for an extended period—predominantly in large, neutral oak casks and/or well-seasoned barrels—allowing it to mature slowly, polish the tannins and develop secondary nuances while preserving the purity of Nebbiolo fruit and the signature Roero fragrance.

Food & Serving
This Roero Riserva is an excellent partner for classic Piemontese dishes such as tajarin with ragù, vitello tonnato, brasato al Barolo-style braises, and agnolotti del plin. It also shines with truffle dishes, roasted game birds, duck, lamb, grilled veal chops, and mature cheeses like Taleggio, Castelmagno or aged Parmigiano-Reggiano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Nebbiolo glasses to let the aromas fully unfold. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to soften the tannins and open the bouquet; older bottles need gentler, shorter decanting mainly to separate any sediment.

Producer
Negro Angelo e Figli is one of the oldest documented winegrowing families in the Roero, with roots in the area dating back to the 17th century. Based in Monteu Roero, the estate has long been a leading voice in demonstrating that Roero’s sandy hills can produce Nebbiolo of great finesse, complexity and longevity. Over generations, the Negro family has expanded and refined their holdings in some of the region’s most expressive crus, while remaining committed to careful vineyard work, low yields and a sensitive, terroir-driven approach in the cellar. Their Roero and Roero Arneis wines have received growing international recognition and critical acclaim, helping to cement the Roero as one of Piemonte’s most exciting and distinctive appellations.
