Description
Andrias Gvino Tako Dry Amber Wine 2023 is a graceful introduction to Georgia’s ancient qvevri tradition, interpreted in an unusually delicate, approachable style. Crafted as a field blend from four native white varieties, this dry “orange” wine offers the character and depth of skin-contact winemaking with an elegant, almost weightless touch. Named after the winemaker’s wife, Tako, it’s a heartfelt tribute that captures both finesse and authenticity in the glass.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Tako 2023 shows a luminous amber hue with golden highlights, the colour hinting at gentle skin contact rather than a full-on, deeply tannic orange style. The nose opens with enticing aromas of dried stone fruits—think apricot and peach—layered with notes of black tea, meadow flowers, wild herbs and a subtle hint of honey.
On the palate, the wine is wonderfully smooth and supple, with a light to medium body and finely poised acidity that keeps everything fresh and lifted. The short maceration brings just a gentle grip rather than pronounced tannins, making the texture silky rather than rustic. Flavours of dried apricot, orange peel, chamomile tea and delicate spice linger on a long, quietly complex finish. While delicious now, especially for those exploring amber wines for the first time, it has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 2–4 years, gaining further nuance and savory depth.
Production
Tako 2023 comes from a single, organically farmed parcel in Kakheti, eastern Georgia, where Kisi, Khikhvi, Kakhuri Mtsvane and Rkatsiteli grow together as a traditional Gemischter Satz (field blend). This mixed planting allows the varieties to be harvested and fermented together, capturing the character of the site as a whole rather than of individual grapes. The grapes are hand-picked and, after only two days of skin contact, the must is transferred into buried clay qvevri—Georgia’s iconic, amphora-like vessels—for one year of maturation. True to the Andrias Gvino philosophy, the wine is made without any additives or added sulphur, and is neither fined nor filtered, resulting in a pure, unadorned expression of terroir and tradition.
Food & Serving
This refined amber wine pairs beautifully with a wide range of dishes, especially those that play with texture and subtle spice: think grilled or baked trout, roasted root vegetables, herbed chicken, Georgian-inspired mezze, or dishes featuring saffron, turmeric, or fresh herbs. It also works wonderfully alongside aged cheeses and tea-inflected or lightly smoky flavours. Serve at 12–14 °C, slightly cooler than a typical light red but a touch warmer than a standard white, to allow the aromatics to fully open. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes helps the wine stretch its legs and reveal more floral and herbal complexity, especially if it has been served straight from a very cool cellar or refrigerator.
