Description

Andremily #8 Syrah 2019 is a bold, meticulously crafted red that showcases the very best of California’s Central Coast. This cuvée combines 88% Syrah, 9% Mourvèdre and 3% Viognier, with 45% whole clusters, yielding a wine that is at once powerful, polished and deeply expressive. Sourced from top sites such as White Hawk, Larner, Harrison-Clarke and Alta Mesa, it represents Andremily’s signature style: luxurious concentration balanced by freshness and detail. Produced in tiny quantities (just 840 cases and a handful of magnums), it has already earned a reputation as one of the stand-out Syrah releases of the 2019 vintage.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Andremily #8 Syrah is an impenetrable, ruby-purple hue, almost inky at the core, signaling both intensity and youth. The nose is immediately captivating, with lifted aromas of blueberry liqueur, black cherry compote and dark plum, layered with anise, roasted coffee bean, and a gorgeous violet perfume from the co-fermented Viognier. The palate is full-bodied and opulent, yet surprisingly poised. Dense black and blue fruits roll across the tongue, framed by polished, rounded tannins and a vibrant streak of fresh acidity that keeps the wine from feeling heavy. Notes of cocoa, espresso, licorice and a touch of smoked meat and spice add complexity as it unfolds in the glass. The finish is very long, intensely aromatic and finely structured, suggesting impressive aging potential. This is a Syrah built for the long haul: expect it to evolve beautifully over 10–15+ years, developing more savory, gamey and truffle-like nuances with time in the cellar.

Production
The fruit for Andremily #8 Syrah 2019 comes from a selection of elite Central Coast vineyards, including the sandy, well-drained soils of White Hawk and the limestone-tinged, wind-cooled slopes of Larner and Harrison-Clarke in Ballard Canyon, along with the higher-elevation Alta Mesa site in the Santa Barbara Highlands. These terroirs deliver low yields of intensely flavored fruit with excellent natural acidity. The grapes are harvested by hand, with rigorous sorting to ensure only pristine bunches make it into the fermenters. About 45% of the Syrah is fermented as whole clusters, adding aromatic lift, structure and complexity. The wine is then aged for 22 months in French oak barriques, 65% of which are new and 35% seasoned, allowing it to gain texture, depth and polish without overwhelming the purity of the fruit, before being bottled in limited quantities.

Food & Serving
This is a richly textured, structured Syrah that pairs beautifully with hearty, flavor-packed dishes. Think grilled ribeye or lamb chops with rosemary, slow-braised short ribs, duck with blackberry or cherry sauce, or game meats such as venison. It also works well with earthy mushroom dishes, charred vegetables, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Gouda. For optimal enjoyment, serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F). Younger bottles will benefit from a generous decant of 1–2 hours to allow the aromatics to fully unfurl and the tannins to soften; older, cellared bottles can be given a shorter, more gentle decant primarily to remove any sediment.

Producer
Andremily Wines is the personal project of winemaker Jim Binns, long associated with the Rhône-style elite in California through his years at Sine Qua Non. Founded in Santa Barbara County, Andremily has quickly earned cult status for its small-batch, intensely characterful Syrah- and Mourvèdre-based wines sourced from some of the most compelling vineyards along the Central Coast. The estate’s meticulous vineyard selection, low yields and precise, hands-on winemaking have led to consistently high critical acclaim and strong demand from collectors. Today, Andremily is viewed as one of the benchmark producers of modern California Syrah, helping to define the region’s reputation for powerful yet refined Rhône-variety reds.
