Description
Anapea Village Vardisperi Rkatsiteli Dry Amber Wine 2022 is a characterful Georgian orange wine that showcases one of Kakheti’s rarest grape varieties in its purest, most traditional form. Crafted from the pink-skinned Vardisperi Rkatsiteli, this qvevri-fermented amber wine combines ancient Georgian methods with careful organic farming for a wine that feels both authentic and quietly adventurous. Its long, patient élevage without added sulphur results in a deeply expressive bottle that speaks clearly of place, grape, and craft.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine shows a deep golden hue with subtle pinkish reflections, a visual cue to the rare Vardisperi clone’s naturally tinted skins and time on the grape solids. The nose is lifted and aromatic, with notes of rose petals and dried barberry, threaded through with gentle spice and hints of herbal tea and dried citrus peel.
On the palate it is soft yet structured, with a rich, textural mouthfeel that unfolds gradually. Flavours of citrus—think preserved lemon and blood orange—meld with ripe plum and tart raspberry, all framed by an earthy, stony minerality that anchors the wine. The tannins, derived from the period on skins, are fine and well-integrated, giving grip without harshness, while a lively, natural acidity keeps everything bright and precise. The finish is long and evolving, carrying lingering tones of spice, dried flowers and a subtle savory note. Enjoyable now after a short aeration, this 2022 has the structure and natural stability to evolve gracefully over the next 5–8 years, gaining further complexity and tertiary nuances.
Production
The grapes come from an organically farmed vineyard in Georgia’s famed Kakheti region, where a continental climate and well-drained, mineral-rich soils help preserve both ripeness and precision in this rare Vardisperi Rkatsiteli clone. The fruit is hand-harvested to ensure careful selection of only the healthiest clusters. Fermentation takes place spontaneously with native yeasts in traditional clay qvevri buried in the earth, where the must remains on skins for around two weeks to build colour, texture and aromatic depth before continuing its five-month qvevri fermentation and maceration. After racking off the solids, the young wine rests for a further two years in the cellar, maturing slowly and naturally. It is bottled without the addition of sulphur, reflecting a minimal-intervention philosophy and allowing the grape and terroir character to shine through unadorned.
Food & Serving
This amber wine is highly versatile at the table and pairs beautifully with flavourful, textural dishes. Try it with Georgian classics such as khachapuri, walnut-based pkhali, lobio (spiced bean stews), or grilled lamb and pork kebabs. Its tannic backbone and lively acidity also complement roasted poultry, duck, game birds, mushroom dishes, aged cheeses, and Middle Eastern or Caucasian spiced cuisine. Serve slightly cooler than a light red, around 12–14°C (54–57°F), to showcase both aromatics and structure. Decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended, especially when the bottle is young, to allow the wine to open up and fully reveal its floral, fruity and mineral dimensions.
