Ampelos Cellars, Syrache, 2021

Ampelos Cellars’ Syrache 2021 is a graceful California take on the classic Syrah-Grenache blend, inspired by the great reds of southern France but shaped by the cool-climate vineyards of Sta. Rita Hills. Danish winemaker Peter Work crafts it with a clear focus on elegance, purity, and minimal intervention, resulting in a wine that feels both refined and expressive.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, inviting ruby hue with a vibrant edge. The nose combines dark berries, red cherries, wild herbs, black pepper, and subtle earthy spice, while the palate is supple and layered, balancing Syrah’s dark fruit and structure with Grenache’s juiciness and lift. The result is a soft, harmonious red with plenty of energy and finesse rather than weight. Its natural acidity and careful élevage suggest it should continue to develop nicely over the next few years, gaining more nuance and complexity with time.

Production
The grapes come from the cool vineyards of Sta. Rita Hills in California, where the climate helps preserve freshness, aromatic detail, and balance. After harvesting, the fruit is destemmed, crushed, and placed in small open-top fermenters, where native yeasts are allowed to begin fermentation naturally. The wine then undergoes 12–16 days of fermentation with twice-daily punch-downs, before being transferred to oak barrels for malolactic fermentation and bottled without fining or filtration.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, duck, grilled sausages, herb-crusted pork, or Mediterranean dishes with rosemary, thyme, and olives. Serve slightly cool, around 16–18°C, and consider a brief decant if opened young to let the aromatic layers open fully.
