Alter Ego 2nd Vin de Château Palmer 2021 is the second wine of one of Margaux’s most celebrated estates, offering a more immediate and approachable expression of the château’s elegance. Crafted in the heart of Bordeaux, it carries the refinement and pedigree associated with Château Palmer while remaining accessible in its youth. Since its introduction, Alter Ego has become a sought-after wine for drinkers looking to experience Palmer’s style in a fresher, more generous form.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 vintage typically shows a deep ruby color with bright purple highlights. The nose leans toward expressive red and black fruits, floral notes, and subtle hints of spice, cedar, and graphite, with the finesse you would expect from Margaux.
On the palate, it is supple and polished, combining ripe berry fruit with fine tannins, fresh acidity, and a graceful, medium-bodied structure. The finish is elegant and persistent, and while it can be enjoyed earlier than the grand vin, it should also age well over the next 8–12 years, gaining complexity and softness with time.
Production
Alter Ego comes from Château Palmer’s vineyards in Margaux, where the estate benefits from gravelly soils that lend freshness, aromatic lift, and structure to the wines. The property’s careful vineyard management and selective harvesting aim to preserve purity and balance, especially in a vintage like 2021, which favored precision and freshness. Vinification is carried out with the same attention to detail as the grand vin, with fermentation and élevage designed to highlight fruit, texture, and the estate’s signature elegance.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roast duck, lamb, mushroom dishes, beef tenderloin, and refined poultry preparations, as well as truffle-based dishes and aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for about 30–60 minutes if drinking young to let the aromatics open and the texture soften.
Producer
Château Palmer is one of the most distinguished estates in Margaux and is renowned for producing wines of exceptional finesse, depth, and perfume. Alter Ego was created as the estate’s second wine, giving enthusiasts a chance to enjoy the Palmer style in a more approachable format. The estate has earned a strong reputation in Bordeaux and beyond for its commitment to quality, biodynamic farming practices, and consistently impressive wines.
