Alois Lageder Lowengang Chardonnay 2023

Alois Lageder’s Löwengang Chardonnay 2023 is a biodynamic, single-estate white wine from Magrè in Alto Adige, combining generous fruit with limestone-driven freshness and mineral character. A landmark for the region, Löwengang Chardonnay was among the first South Tyrolean white wines to gain international recognition in the 1980s.

Tasting Notes
The nose brings together pear, apricot and peach with floral notes and hints of butter and vanilla. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and textured, balanced by lively acidity and pronounced mineral character, with a lingering finish marked by bitter almond. The 2023 is described as having the structure to age for more than a decade, gaining further complexity with time in the cellar.

Production
The grapes come from selected parcels at the Tòr Löwengang estate in Magrè, at elevations of 210 to 610 metres. Warm conditions are moderated by marked day-to-night temperature shifts, while sandy, gravelly soils rich in limestone contribute freshness and a distinctive mineral character. Farming follows biodynamic principles; after harvest, the must ferments spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in small and large wooden casks. The wine rests on its lees for around eleven months before blending and further maturation. Harvesting methods are not specified.

Pair this structured Chardonnay with shellfish, seafood, poultry or other light meats, and cheeses. Serve lightly chilled, around 10–12°C, to let its fruit and mineral character show. A short decant can help open the wine, particularly if enjoying it in its youth.
