Description

Alois Lageder Löwengang Chardonnay 2022 is a benchmark white from Alto Adige, long regarded as one of Italy’s most refined and ageworthy Chardonnays. First making international waves in the 1980s, it played a pivotal role in putting South Tyrol’s white wines on the global fine wine map. The 2022 vintage continues this legacy with a precise, layered expression that marries alpine freshness with Burgundian-style depth and complexity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Löwengang Chardonnay 2022 shows a bright, luminous straw-yellow color with subtle golden reflections, hinting at both ripeness and concentration. The nose is elegant yet expressive, revealing layers of ripe orchard fruits (pear, golden apple), citrus zest and white peach, interwoven with floral notes of acacia and chamomile. Gentle oak influence adds nuances of toasted hazelnut, vanilla pod, brioche and a faint smokiness, while a saline, mineral lift speaks clearly of its alpine origins. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied but wonderfully poised, with a silky texture supported by vibrant, mouthwatering acidity. Flavors of ripe stone fruit, citrus cream, and baked apple are framed by fine, integrated oak and a distinct chalky-mineral backbone. The mid-palate is rich and creamy thanks to extended lees contact, yet the finish is long, clean and precise, with lingering notes of lemon curd, toasted nuts and wet stone. While already captivating in its youth, the wine has excellent aging potential: expect it to develop greater complexity, honeyed tones and nutty, tertiary nuances over 8–10 years and beyond if well cellared.

Production
Löwengang Chardonnay is sourced from estate vineyards around Margreid in the southern part of Alto Adige, an area characterized by warm days, cool nights and a complex mosaic of alluvial, calcareous and gravelly soils. These diverse micro-zones, combined with the region’s alpine influence, give the wine both ripeness and remarkable freshness. Alois Lageder farms according to biodynamic principles, emphasizing low yields, biodiversity and meticulous selection in the vineyard; grapes are hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, the must is typically fermented in oak barrels (often a mix of new and used barriques and larger casks), with careful control of temperature and partial malolactic fermentation to balance richness and tension. The wine is then aged on its lees for an extended period, with gentle bâtonnage, allowing texture and complexity to build while preserving clarity and finesse.

Food & Serving
This Chardonnay’s combination of structure, freshness and subtle oak makes it a versatile partner at the table. It pairs beautifully with rich seafood dishes such as seared scallops, lobster with butter sauce, or roasted turbot, as well as creamy risottos, free-range roast chicken, veal in delicate cream sauces, or truffle-inflected dishes. It also complements aged Alpine cheeses and mild, nutty cow’s milk cheeses. Serve at 10–12°C to highlight its aromatic complexity and vibrant acidity; if possible, decant for 30 minutes to an hour when young to allow the wine to open fully and reveal its layered bouquet.

Producer
Alois Lageder is one of Alto Adige’s most respected and forward-thinking estates, with a family history in wine spanning over 150 years. Based in Magrè (Margreid), the winery has been instrumental in redefining the region’s quality standards, particularly for white wines, and was among the pioneers in introducing an international audience to the potential of South Tyrol. The estate is renowned for its commitment to biodynamic viticulture, sustainable practices and an uncompromising focus on expressing terroir through precision and elegance. Löwengang, in particular, holds historical significance as the first South Tyrolean white wine to achieve international acclaim in the 1980s, and it remains a flagship cuvée and a reference point for high-end Italian Chardonnay today.
