Description

Alois Lageder Chardonnay Gaun 2024 is a vibrant, mountain-fresh expression of Chardonnay from the cool, Alpine slopes of Trentino-Alto Adige in Northern Italy. Crafted by one of the region’s benchmark producers, it offers remarkable precision, purity and drinkability, while still having the structure to develop in bottle. The “Gaun” name recalls the Lageder family’s historical roots, tying this modern, terroir-driven white to generations of winemaking know‑how in Alto Adige.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Chardonnay Gaun 2024 shows a bright, straw-yellow color with youthful green reflections, signaling freshness and energy. The nose is expressive yet refined, with aromas of crisp green apple, pear, and lemon zest layered over white peach, complemented by delicate floral notes, fresh herbs, and a hint of wet stone and subtle creaminess. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, bone to dry with a sleek, linear profile driven by Alto Adige’s naturally brisk acidity. Juicy citrus and orchard fruit are framed by a fine mineral edge and a gentle, well-integrated touch of oak that adds texture rather than heaviness. The finish is long, clean and saline, leaving a lingering impression of citrus peel and chalk. While immediately appealing in its youth, this 2024 vintage should gain additional complexity and roundness over the next 3–5 years, developing more nutty and buttery nuances with careful cellaring.

Production
Chardonnay Gaun 2024 is sourced from carefully selected vineyards in the southern part of Alto Adige, where the Adige Valley’s warm days and cool nights help the grapes ripen slowly while preserving acidity. Soils here are predominantly gravelly and calcareous, giving the wine its tension and mineral clarity, while the Alpine influence keeps the style precise and elegant. The fruit is farmed organically and biodynamically, then harvested by hand to ensure optimal ripeness and careful bunch selection. In the cellar, fermentation occurs with a gentle, minimally interventionist approach, using stainless steel and large neutral oak casks to balance freshness with texture. Extended lees contact adds depth and creaminess without overshadowing the wine’s natural brightness, resulting in a refined, terroir-expressive Chardonnay.

Food & Serving
This Chardonnay is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with grilled or pan-seared fish, shellfish, sushi, poultry, vegetable risottos and light pasta dishes with cream or butter-based sauces. It also works well with soft young cheeses and delicate alpine cheeses. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 8–10°C (46–50°F) in medium-sized white wine glasses. Decanting is not essential, but pouring the wine into a carafe 15–20 minutes before serving can help it open up aromatic complexity, especially in its first year after release.

Producer
Alois Lageder is one of Alto Adige’s most respected and forward-thinking estates, with a winemaking history that stretches back to the 19th century. Based in Magrè, the family has played a key role in defining the region’s modern identity—championing quality, precision and sustainable viticulture long before it became mainstream. Today, the estate is certified organic and works extensively with biodynamic principles, acting as a reference point for environmentally conscious, terroir-driven wines in Northern Italy. Known for their elegance and purity across both white and red wines, Alois Lageder has earned an international reputation and consistent critical acclaim, making Chardonnay Gaun a reliable choice for those seeking a refined yet characterful Alto Adige Chardonnay.
