Description

Allegrini La Poja Corvina 2019 is a powerful, single-vineyard expression of Valpolicella’s signature grape, Corvina, crafted in a style that rivals many great Italian reds. Sourced exclusively from the summit of the famed La Grola hill, this wine shows just how profound and ageworthy Corvina can be when given a grand cru–like setting. Conceived in 1979 by Giovanni Allegrini, whose intuition led him to plant only Corvina on this plateau, La Poja has since become a modern icon of Veneto, redefining expectations for the region’s still red wines.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 La Poja presents a deep, concentrated ruby red hue with vivid garnet reflections at the rim, signaling both intensity and refinement. The nose is luxurious and layered: ripe black cherry and morello cherry weave with notes of blackberry compote, violets, licorice, and dried rose petals, supported by hints of sweet baking spice, vanilla, cocoa, and a subtle graphite and tobacco edge from its time in fine oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet beautifully composed, with a firm, polished tannic structure and a core of pure, dark cherry and plum fruit. Energetic acidity from the Corvina keeps everything fresh and focused, while nuances of black pepper, cedar, espresso, and dried herbs unfold with air. The finish is exceptionally long, mineral-driven, and savory, suggesting significant aging potential. While already impressive in 2019, this vintage will reward patience, comfortably evolving and gaining complexity over 12–20 years in a good cellar.

Production
La Poja comes from a single, high-lying plateau on the La Grola hill in Valpolicella Classica, an area marked by poor, white limestone and chalky soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. The elevated position offers excellent sun exposure and cooling breezes from nearby Lake Garda, extending the growing season and allowing Corvina to ripen slowly while preserving its vibrant acidity. Grapes are meticulously hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, with strict selection in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only the finest bunches are used. Unlike Amarone, La Poja is not made via appassimento; instead, it is a pure, dry expression of Corvina, fermented traditionally in temperature-controlled tanks to extract color, aroma, and structure with precision. The wine is then aged in high-quality French oak barriques (a significant portion new) for an extended period, followed by further bottle aging, allowing the tannins to integrate and the wine’s distinctive aromatics and minerality to fully emerge.

Food & Serving
This is a serious gastronomic wine, best matched with richly flavored dishes such as grilled or roasted red meats, venison, wild boar, braised lamb shanks, or slow-cooked beef stews. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano, Grana Padano, or mature Pecorino, and with earthy preparations featuring mushrooms or truffles. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux-style glasses to allow the aromatics to expand. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is strongly recommended, especially in its youth, to soften the structure and reveal the full depth and complexity of the 2019 vintage.

Producer
Allegrini is one of the most respected and influential family estates in the Veneto, with roots in Valpolicella dating back to the 16th century. Based in the historic heart of Valpolicella Classica, the winery has been a driving force in elevating the reputation of the region’s wines, particularly Amarone and refined single-vineyard reds like La Poja. The late Giovanni Allegrini was instrumental in pioneering modern viticultural and winemaking techniques in the area, from meticulous vineyard management to careful use of French oak, helping to shape a more contemporary, terroir-focused style. Today, the Allegrini family continues to steward some of the appellation’s finest hillside sites and has garnered international acclaim, with their top wines regularly praised by leading critics and collectors for their consistency, character, and ageworthiness.
