Description
Aldo Conterno Barolo Bussia Romirasco 2021 is a powerful, classically structured Barolo from one of Piedmont’s most revered crus. Crafted entirely from Nebbiolo, it captures the depth, perfume and tension that make Bussia – and especially the Romirasco vineyard – a reference point for serious collectors. This is a site- and vintage-driven wine, designed to age gracefully while already showing remarkable clarity and definition in its youth.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Bussia Romirasco is typically luminous garnet with a delicate brick-tinged rim, showcasing Nebbiolo’s hallmark transparency. The nose is highly expressive and layered: rose petals, violets and dried herbs mingle with red cherry, wild strawberry and blood orange, supported by notes of anise, tobacco leaf, tar, and subtle spice from carefully judged oak.
On the palate, this Barolo is both taut and finely textured, with a core of vibrant red fruit wrapped in firm, polished tannins. Flavors of sour cherry, pomegranate and raspberry coulis unfold into darker nuances of plum skin, licorice, dried flowers and earthy minerality. The acidity is bright and mouthwatering, giving the wine lift and precision, while the finish is long, savory and delicately saline. The 2021 vintage shows classic structure and excellent balance, making this a wine with significant aging potential: it will reward patience over 10–20 years, gaining complexity, softness of tannin and more pronounced tertiary notes of leather, truffle and forest floor.
Production
Sourced from the renowned Romirasco parcel within the Bussia cru in Monforte d’Alba, this Barolo comes from steep, well-exposed vineyards with calcareous clay and marl soils that give both power and finesse to Nebbiolo. The vines, rooted deeply in this poor, mineral-laden terrain, naturally produce low yields of concentrated fruit. Harvest is carried out by hand, allowing for strict bunch selection in the vineyard and again in the cellar. After a gentle crushing and destemming, the must typically undergoes a traditional, extended maceration on the skins to extract color, tannin and aromatic complexity. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vessels, followed by aging in large oak casks (botti), which respect the purity of the fruit and highlight the character of Romirasco rather than overt oak influence. The result is an archetypal Barolo that marries depth, precision and terroir expression.
Food & Serving
This Barolo is a natural partner for rich, savory cuisine, particularly the traditional dishes of Piedmont. Think braised beef or veal, osso buco, roasted lamb, game birds, truffle risotto, porcini mushroom pastas, and mature hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or aged Pecorino. To show the wine at its best, serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F). In its youth, decanting for 1.5–3 hours helps the aromatics to unfurl and the tannins to soften; with extended bottle age, a shorter, gentle decant primarily to remove sediment will be sufficient.
Producer
Poderi Aldo Conterno is one of Barolo’s benchmark estates, based in the village of Monforte d’Alba in the heart of the Bussia cru. Founded by Aldo Conterno in 1969, after he parted ways with the larger Conterno family estate, the winery quickly gained a reputation for wines that bridge the gap between strict traditionalism and thoughtful, quality-driven innovation. Aldo and now his sons have focused on meticulous vineyard work and careful, minimally intrusive cellar practices, elevating single-vineyard Barolo bottlings like Bussia Romirasco to international acclaim. Today, Aldo Conterno is widely regarded as a leading voice of Monforte, helping define the powerful yet refined style that has made this corner of Piedmont one of the world’s most sought-after sources of age-worthy Nebbiolo.
