Description
Alain Voge Cornas Vieilles Vignes 2018 is a powerful and deeply expressive Northern Rhône Syrah crafted from some of the finest old-vine parcels in the Cornas appellation. Sourced from legendary lieux-dits such as Combe, Patou, La Côte, Les Mazards and Chaillot, it offers a striking combination of intensity, precision and terroir character. This cuvée has long been a benchmark for Cornas, showcasing the granitic hillsides and traditional craftsmanship that have made the appellation one of the great sources of ageworthy Syrah.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Vieilles Vignes is dark and inky, almost opaque at the core, with a vivid purple rim that hints at its concentration and youth. The nose is layered and inviting, lifting from the glass with bright, fresh notes of red raspberries and ripe plum, interwoven with nuances of cedar, menthol, crushed stone and a subtle hint of spice and smoke.
On the palate, this is a full-bodied, concentrated Cornas with real drive and structure. The granitic backbone gives a firm, linear feel, while the old vines contribute depth and density of fruit. Flavours of black and red berries, plum skin, graphite, cedar and cool herbal tones unfold in waves, carried by fine-grained, almost silky tannins that keep everything in perfect balance. The finish is long, resonant and precise, suggesting excellent aging potential; with proper cellaring, this 2018 should continue to evolve and gain complexity over 10–20 years.
Production
The fruit for Cornas Vieilles Vignes comes from old Syrah vines rooted in steep, terraced granite slopes in some of the appellation’s most respected sites, including Combe, Patou, La Côte, Les Mazards and Chaillot. These vineyards, typical of Cornas, offer poor, stony soils and excellent drainage, naturally limiting yields and concentrating flavor in the berries. Grapes are typically harvested by hand due to the steepness of the terrain, ensuring careful selection in the vineyard. In the cellar, traditional methods are favored, with fermentation designed to preserve the purity and energy of the fruit, followed by 20 months of aging in French oak, around 15% of which is new. This measured use of oak brings gentle structure and complexity without overwhelming the expression of terroir.
Food & Serving
This robust, structured Cornas pairs beautifully with richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, slow-braised beef or venison, duck with black olives, or hearty stews and cassoulet. It also works well with aged hard cheeses and dishes featuring wild mushrooms or black pepper. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase its aromatic complexity and freshness. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth is recommended to soften the tannins and allow the wine’s layers of fruit, spice and minerality to fully emerge.
