Description
Alain Voge Cornas Vieilles Vignes 2014 is a powerful, old-vine expression of Syrah from one of the Northern Rhône’s benchmark producers. Sourced from some of the appellation’s steepest, poorest granitic slopes, it delivers depth, concentration and a classic Cornas profile that rewards patience. This cuvée has become a reference point for traditionally styled yet impeccably made Cornas, reflecting both the heritage of the appellation and Alain Voge’s pioneering work in elevating its reputation.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2014 Vieilles Vignes shows a deep, opaque ruby to purple hue, signaling its concentration and youthful intensity. The nose is initially restrained but quickly opens with dark graphite and crushed stone notes, intertwined with blackberries, blueberries and black cherries. Layers of licorice, cracked black pepper, smoked meat and a distinct impression of warm, scorched earth add complexity, recalling the rugged slopes of Cornas.
On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, tightly focused and clearly built for aging. Dark black and blue fruits are framed by firm, fine-grained tannins and a vibrant, savory backbone. Flavors of black olive tapenade, grilled herbs, cocoa nibs and earthy minerality linger through a long, structured finish. Still on the youthful side, the 2014 benefits from additional cellaring; it is excellent now with aeration but will continue to develop more nuance over the next decade. Drinking window is broadly from 2018–2028+, depending on your preference for primary fruit versus tertiary, gamey complexity.
Production
Cornas Vieilles Vignes is sourced from old Syrah vines rooted in the classic, decomposed granite soils and steep, terraced hillsides of Cornas, where low fertility and excellent drainage naturally limit yields and intensify flavor. The vineyards are farmed with great care, with a strong emphasis on respect for the environment and the character of the terroir. Grapes are harvested by hand due to the extreme slopes, ensuring only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit reaches the winery. Vinification is traditional: Syrah is generally fermented with a high proportion of whole clusters or carefully managed destemming (depending on parcel and vintage), followed by a long maceration to extract color, structure and aromatics. The 2014 was then matured for about 18 months in French oak, of which roughly 15% was new, allowing the wine to gain texture and complexity without masking its granite-driven freshness.
Food & Serving
This Cornas is a natural match for robust, savory dishes that can stand up to its structure and intensity. Think slow-braised lamb shanks, roast venison, grilled ribeye steaks, game birds with wild mushrooms, or hearty stews with root vegetables and lentils. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses, such as Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and balance. In its current phase, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to soften the tannins and allow the graphite, dark fruit and smoky, earthy nuances to fully emerge.
Producer
The Domaine Alain Voge is one of the key names behind the renaissance of Cornas, helping to transform the appellation from a rustic insider’s secret into a globally recognized source of serious, age-worthy Syrah. Founded in the mid-20th century, the estate gradually consolidated small, steep parcels across Cornas and Saint-Péray, focusing on meticulous vineyard work and low-yielding old vines. Under Alain Voge’s leadership, and now his successors, the domaine has been a strong advocate for expressing terroir with clarity, often through organic and increasingly biodynamic practices. Their wines regularly receive critical acclaim and are considered benchmarks for the region, with Cornas Vieilles Vignes standing as one of their flagship cuvées, celebrated for its authenticity, depth and long-lived character.
