Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Les Vieilles Fontaines is inky purple-black, almost opaque, with a youthful, viscous hue that immediately signals concentration. The nose is intensely aromatic and layered, showing blackberries and blueberry compote alongside rose petals, candied violets, cracked pepper, bloody meat and a savory bouquet garni of thyme, rosemary and bay. On the palate, this is uber-rich, dense and muscular, with a core of black and blue fruit framed by powerful yet finely etched tannins. Notes of smoked meat, iron, licorice, graphite and dried herbs add complexity, with bright, well-integrated acidity keeping the wine vibrant despite its mass. The finish is long, forceful and persistent, suggesting impressive aging potential. This 2020 is far from ready; it should ideally be left untouched for at least 4–5 years and, in magnum, will reward careful cellaring for two decades or more, provided storage conditions are excellent, particularly given the presence of a touch of volatile acidity.

Production
Les Vieilles Fontaines is drawn from some of Alain Voge’s oldest Syrah vines, around 80 years of age, rooted deep in the steep, terraced granite slopes of Cornas in the Northern Rhône. This rugged terroir, with its poor, decomposed granite soils and dramatic exposures, naturally restricts yields and concentrates flavor. Harvest is carried out by hand due to the steepness of the vineyards, with rigorous selection in the vineyard and at the cellar. The grapes are traditionally vinified, typically with a proportion of whole clusters, to enhance aromatic lift and structure, followed by a long maceration to extract color, tannin and complexity. Aging takes place in carefully chosen oak (often largely used barrels) to respect the purity of the Syrah and the expression of the granitic terroir, resulting in a wine of great power, depth and longevity.

Food & Serving
This is a serious, structured Cornas that shines alongside robust, savory dishes: think slow-braised lamb shank, grilled ribeye, venison, duck breast with black pepper jus, or game stews. It also pairs beautifully with earthy preparations such as wild mushroom ragout, lentils with smoked pork, or aged, hard cheeses like Comté or mature Tomme. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to keep the freshness and aromatic complexity in balance. Given its youth and concentration, decanting is highly recommended—at least 2–3 hours for near-term drinking, and even longer for the first decade of its life—to allow the wine to unfurl and soften.
